I was really wary of this after DEATH PROOF,but I'm pleased to report it is fantastic!
Now this is Tarantino back to superb story-telling form.

Ze Juden Bearen-with his bat? Jesus, brutal, but funny at the same time!

Mexican standoff with guns pointed at bollocks?

His use of music is also great, sounding like a western, but definetly a great war film.

Brilliant stuff!

That's really cool to hear. I've got the BD sitting on my shelf to watch.

Tarantino seemed to be going off the boil after Kill Bill 1+2 (good but too long) and Death Proof (just average).

Hope this is as good as it's said to be. That's tonight's viewing sorted. :pop2:

Daemonia 2nd January 2010 05:39 PM

After the misfire (IMO) of Death Proof, I had low hopes for Inglourious Basterds. But then I watched it - Tarantino sneaked in at the last moment to make what is arguably the best film of the decade. The scripting is flawless, the performances pitch perfect and it's overall just a joy to watch. Also love the nod to Hugo Stiglitz - now how many people would even know who he is? Possibly one of the most obscure references that he's ever used, but I was quite chuffed that Tarantino recognises the mightiness of this man! LOL!

It's something else mate, it's like seeing the film for the first time! Ha :)

Daemonia 2nd January 2010 09:55 PM

Has anyone got the UK Optimum Blu-ray of Evil Dead 2? What's it like?

Stephen@Cult Labs 2nd January 2010 10:18 PM

I've heard some great things about the transfer for Braveheart so It's definately on my to buy list  And I'd like to know how the Optimum Evil Dead 2 looks too,if it's better than Anchor Bay's disc, which I own and looks like someone has thrown a layer of frozen grain over the whole picture

The previous BBFC cut has been waived for the Braveheart release.

The scene in question has always made me uneasy.Funny that, with all the violence if seen in films, but there's just some things that i dont like seeing.

vincenzo 2nd January 2010 10:48 PM

Yes throat slashings were never popular with Mr Ferman. Especially for a 15. Surprising that much of the later violence in the film was left intact.

I have it and am not overly impressed with the picture or audio quality.

Sam 3rd January 2010 09:45 AM

Watched the remake of One Missed Call on Blu Ray last night, after picking it up for £4.50 in W H Smiths. Not exactly a classic but I kind of enjoyed it. The Blu Ray transfer was flawless but the disc was bare bones.

I'll just stick with my Anchor Bay disc I think

I quite enjoyed One Missed Call too.Definately nowhere near the best horror remake out there but at least the phone ringtone in this one was a little better than the original IMO

It's almost laughably noise reduced. Ash and co are now wax.

The Anchor Bay THX dvd is much better.

Daemonia 3rd January 2010 01:50 PM

Thanks for the replies - I'll avoid all current Blu-ray's of Evil Dead 2 then. I'm sure there'll be a decent remaster down the line.

I just picked up a couple of films in HMV

I got the Dragon Dynasty version of King Boxer and a film that I had to buy once I saw the title Teenage Hooker Becomes a Killing Machine a Korean revenge film that aparantly has shades of Tetsuo and Eraserhead. Should be an interesting watch

Kyle 3rd January 2010 05:28 PM

i got THBAKM a while ago from cex but not watched it yet! looks great

Rob Strange 3rd January 2010 07:41 PM

ditto
but my copy is back in Bristol :ohwell:

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 4th January 2010 12:48 PM

Children of the Corn-best it's ever looked and sounded!

Those corn fields look SO menacing in hi def!

Daemonia 4th January 2010 03:35 PM

Cheers for that, reaps! A copy of that will be mine....

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 4th January 2010 05:45 PM

No probs mate.:thumb:

I watched BLADE RUNNER The International theatrical cut,and although not quite as stunning looking as the Final Cut,still looked and sounded amazing.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 4th January 2010 05:46 PM

Not so good news about EVIL DEAD II though.
I recently bought this AND Army of Darkness.....

Anyone know if AOD is any better?

Stephen@Cult Labs 4th January 2010 05:59 PM

Couldn't tell you.I'm sure I did see that someone here has AOD.....I'm still waiting and hoping for a release of the Director's Cut

Rob Strange 4th January 2010 06:15 PM

Aye, Army Of Darkness is better. Edge enhancement does let it down a bit, but it's still a decent image - and a pretty significant upgrade from the dvd.

I've grown to enjoy the faster pace of the theatrical cut - though I think I still prefer the "slept too long!" ending.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 4th January 2010 06:23 PM

Good.
I'll need to check out ED II soon.....

Daemonia 5th January 2010 04:04 PM

Watched Creepshow on Blu-ray last night and it looked and sounded incredible. The audio is onlly DD 2.0 or TrueHD 2.0, but it's more than perfect for the film. It really doesn't need audio fireworks, it's not that kind of film. As it stands, this is the best it has ever looked or sounded - and for the first time ever it made me jump! An absolute joy to watch in HD. :)

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 5th January 2010 06:43 PM

Another purchase then....

I finished watching Arrow's DAWN OF THE DEAD on BR last night, and the job really is sterling!

If you have a 'dynamic' picture setting on your telly,I recommend using this.A bit bright normally for most films, but perfect for DAWN!
Just watch those funky '70's purples and greens in the mall scenes jump out,and the old blood with that 'melted red crayon' look.
Bloody brilliant!:coolblue:

Great minds think a like BS! Or those obsessed with ZOMBIEEEES!

ZOMBIES!

BioZombie 5th January 2010 08:50 PM

I just picked up Enter The Dragon on BD I read it looks really nice (I hear its a direct port of the HD-DVD), no HD audio though. Cant wait to see Bruce kick some ass in high definition.

BioZombie 5th January 2010 09:05 PM

Picked up the Children of the Corn Trilogy (Anchor Bay) in CEX today. Havent seen these in years so look forward to enjoying them again!!

Sam 5th January 2010 09:20 PM

Just finished watching La Haine on Blu Ray. The last time I watched this was on VHS and it looks and sounds great in high definition. The extras from the DVD special edition haven't been transferred to the Blu Ray, which is unforgiveable really but it can be picked up cheaply enough so can't complaint (well, maybe just a bit ;))

vipco 5th January 2010 11:36 PM

Not horror but now quite cheap is the Sex in the City Extended BluRay version.

Great film and a lovely looking print.
