For my tupence... Basterds is great in places but seems kinda botched as a whole(and you can always have a laugh at Pitt's vocals) but is miles ahead of Death Proof, Abe Lincoln is great fun and really enjoyed it on Film4 but as I recorded it off freeview it was only when I saw the BD in Oxfam for £2.99 thought 'I'll have that'. For the record really love Jackie Brown (the genuine affection between Grier and Forster in the final scene is a great cinema moment.)

I have to say that it didn't remind me of Argento at all. Other than nice cinematography and an interesting score. I kinda dug it but wouldn't rave about it, I'd give it 3.5/5 only but have decided that it is worth keeping. Funny thing is, I think I preferred the non-horror aspects of it, when it was just dealing with the cut-throat world of fashion. |

My two cents. I think Tarantino is one of the most interesting directors working today. Ever since Kill Bill volume one, he also became visually interesting rather than just good scripting, acting and editing. Death Proof is easily his weakest but it's still entertaining enough nonsense. My favourite is still Reservoir Dogs.

Something probably best summed up by the astonishing attention to detail, including the antique 1870s Martin guitar which Kurt Russell smashed beyond repair, and determination to use 70 mm film and 2.76:1 Panavision anamorphic lenses for Robert Richardson to shoot The Hateful Eight.

Eek! I seem to have started another stream of anti - Quentin venom. Didn't mean that. I just really enjoyed Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter. It was a film i hoped to like but loved it far more than i actually anticipated. For the record. Reservoir Dogs is in my top 20 films of all time. Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown are also very good. I'm not so keen on the Kill Bill films, thought Death Proof was good, liked Inglorious, although it's too long and never gets better than it's opening 20 mins, and fell asleep during Django and never returned to it. I bought The Hateful 8 in Sainsbury's before Christmas but haven't seen it yet. Maybe this weekend. |
