I wondered if someone would comment on the Predator blu. I've been put.off getting it for a while by the poor reviews this disc gets. Must be honest I've not watched it end to end yet but having a flick through I don't think it looks that bad at all. I admit though some of the close ups of faces, particularly at the start and particularly Carl Weathers do look so smoothed out as to appear almost CGI. Probably helps that I'm not fond of grain.

I got it in a deal from HMV and although I've only watched it once, I didn't think it looked as bad as people were making out, certainly not unwatchable by any means, but they do look like waxworks!

J Harker 23rd July 2013 06:27 PM

Agree. From what I gather there isn't a really good blu of Predator out there yet.

I think the other UK one has better PQ, but lacks the extras

J Harker 23rd July 2013 06:33 PM

I thought the other one had a lot of flack for having an overly grainy picture? Hence Fox going into DNR overkill on this version?

Yeah, the film stock used to shoot it, resulted in a pretty grainy image. People complained that it was too grainy, so Fox went crazy with the special edition disc. I prefer the first disc as it's more faithful to what you would've seen at the cinema. I'll always take that over DNR.

Prince_Vajda 23rd July 2013 07:05 PM

What Stephen said.

Predator is a movie from 1987, shot on normal film.

The original UK Blu-ray preserves the original (i.e. rough and grainy) look of the movie. That's the way it should be.

'Nuff said.

Yeah, I think it also depends on your tv/settings. That's pretty close to what it was like on my tv though.

napalm-in-the-morning 23rd July 2013 08:22 PM

Best bet is to keep your dvd 2 disc set for the commentary and extras and stick to the original blu UK release for hi Def viewing. I actually gave away my blu special edition as the DNR madness made the film look like a plasticine epic! I gather the old blu release is getting harder to find now.

Nordicdusk 23rd July 2013 08:35 PM

I only glanced through Predator Blu Ray and taught it looked great but for the wax museum faces at the start. But what do i know i like shiny things

I couldn't do that as I'd feel too guilty!

nosferatu42 24th July 2013 02:42 PM

Personally i liked Possession although i've heard that some other people found it too arty and overdramatic. Its got gore, an insane slimy tentacled creature and two stars overacting wildly, (what's not to like). Might have to watch this again soon now. :pop2:

I don't know about 'overacting wildly' as I thing it features Isabella Adjani's finest performance!

vaultkeeper 24th July 2013 03:40 PM

Was in Denmark last week, picked up the following

http://s11.postimg.org/r4u85d6f7/IMG_1854.jpg

Good thing i found Strømer which is a Danish poliziotteschi/eurocrime classic from 1976. And the Danish giallo Nitten røde roser (Nineteen Red Roses) from 1974. Both of them in Danish without subtitles except Danish hard-of-hearing subs, lucky that I understand Danish (because I speak Swedish, which is very closely related)

I honestly wasn't complaining, perfectly compliments the film. Possession would make an interesting double bill with The Brood i think. Both based around relationship breakdown manifesting unspeakable horror. :pop2:

Choose which section you want the thread to be in, open it up, then click on the new thread link at the top.

I see what you mean and, yeah, that would make an excellent double bill.

Before you do (I know you've already done it, but bear this in mind for future reference), do a search to make sure a similar thread doesn't already exist.

nosferatu42 24th July 2013 06:58 PM

Ok will do. just need to think of a suitable subject now.

Having a Brian de Palma revisit this summer. Mostly a good experience but Body Double is hideous. Really found it insufferable and dull. Next up Raising Cane which I remember I liked years ago. Wonder if it stands up?!

Talking of Body Double. For those who like the film, The Twilight Time Blu-ray goes up for preorder in 10 mins!

napalm-in-the-morning 24th July 2013 07:56 PM

Big de Palma fan but hi Def just can't lift this one out of the dump bin for me. It seems to fail on just too many levels from plotting to pacing and onwards. The only good point for me is the score.

Had a wonderful day in the neighbouring seaside town of Bognor Regis. It's Bognor Rox Festival of music and arts at the weekend if anyone is interested, it seemed to be okay last year!

Anyway although Bognor has a plethora of charity shops and such it must've been picked clean and be waiting for new stock 'cos all I found today was:
http://www.q8-dvds.com/wp-content/th...&s=&f=&cc=&ct=
"Psychic Wars" from the MANGA COLLECTION

and http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...sL._SY300_.jpg
The evocatively entitled "Drainiac" (2000) for a squid from a second hand DVD and games place that I cannot remember the name of but was neat and easy to browse. :loco:

Really good – I think it's better than the original. For what it's worth, this is my review – Maniac | Film 365
