Both look stunning as well. I don't know why they haven't had a blu release (niche titles possibly).

I had a quick look at Eye Of The Tiger earlier. It does look really good. As you say, I think it's more to do with them being niche titles and selling more this way for Shout.

Having seen the quality of these budget releases i can't wait for the forthcoming horror and sci-fi sets.

Didnt even know they had done a new TRIGUN series.

Better yet it was only £9.99 on blu-ray in HMV!

Went shopping to Havant for a change. Havant has lots of charity shops but I had to restrain myself because "The Voice of Reason" AKA my wife, Pearl, kept saying things like "that's nearly £10 you've spent!" and "are you trying to buy one in each shop?"

Despite the barrage I managed to purchase:
"Soulkeeper"
"The Invasion"
"Dreamhouse"
"Fallen"
"The Tall Man"

All for a gnat's under £8

Yes it am! Picked up in the PDSA shop with "Dreamhouse" at 2 for £3. I was surprised at "The Tall Man" being in the charity shop already because it is so recent!

More like "Is that the Pascal Laugier film?" - after all, he's the guy behind the excellent Martyrs. ;)

I liked The Tall Man, but it isn't as good as his last two films by any stretch. It's interesting though; far more commercial than his last two, but it proves that Laugier is a director that has some interesting ideas, and the film goes to places you don't expect. The trailer sells it as a very different film to the one you actually get which I found refreshing.

Haha, that's what I was about to post, I didn't even know who played the female lead  . I liked half of Martyrs, and remember this got some decent reviews, might give it a go when I get the chance . . .

I found Martyrs really depressing. Only watched it once.

Yeah I've only watched it once. The second half put me off  But for the first half I found it a very effective horror: scary, nasty, and very intense  Inside is by far my favourite of that batch of French shockers though . . .

Count Fosco 7th July 2013 10:08 AM

I agree INSIDE was brutally brilliant. Check out the follow-up LIVID. Not a sequel but same creative duo and whilst it has some issues it has a fantastic dreamlike quality in places. Plus a blatant acknowledgement of Dario Argento's 'Three Mothers' trilogy, especially SUSPIRIA, in fact I like to see this film as the superior substitute version of 'Mother of Tears'.

antmumford 7th July 2013 10:10 AM

Popped into Sainsbury's and bought Dredd Blu for £6, bargain when the DVD is £5. Then I found Life of Pi Limited edition Sainsbury exclusive Blu for only £10, absolute bargain for an absolutely fantastic film, the DVD was £11.99, where's the logic? :D

Yeah I watched that and didn't like it. In fact, it's faded so far in my mind I can't really remember what I didn't like about it  . . .

Demdike@Cult Labs 7th July 2013 10:35 AM

Pardon me for naming the Hollywood star of a film for easy reference rather than the obscure director with only two previous film credits to his name, and only one of which people may have seen.

:D

Probably the rather uneven mix of nightmarish fantasy with an extended 'teenagers in a haunted house' sequence which feels like a clumsy copy of numerous American horror films. Plus, loads of people took issue with the 'non' ending but I really liked where it went.

I don't think it's as good as Inside, but I've seen Livid twice and it definitely improves on second viewing.

This thread has made me realise how long it's been since I saw Inside, and I really should watch it again sometime soon but is a real pain with light nights as they aren't conducive to watching horror films.

Not the best carboot takings today but I picked up...

DVD
Dead Mans Hand - some Full Moon cheese.
The Devils Rejects - glad to finally own it.
NEDS - great drama
Troll Hunter - I already own the Region 1 release, but couldn't resist picking up the lenticular slipcase for a quid.

VHS

Cobra - Warner sell thru.
Hellraiser 2 - another sell thru, but looks alright.
Rambo 3 - ex rental guild big box with classic artwork.

Also grabbed Sightseers cheap at a supermarket on the way home. Wanted to see it for a while and thoroughly enjoyed it.

demonknight 7th July 2013 01:30 PM

Just pre ordered The Brood Bluray. Won't have to wait long as it's being released tomorrow ;)

had nothing better too do today so went in to Newcastle and pick some stuff up from CEX. might of paid a bit much for dawn of the dead, never seen the hunger so that's a blind buy and got people under the stairs to give it another chance (with it might be coming a arrow blu release) because the first time i saw it i didn't like it

Delirium 7th July 2013 02:39 PM

Inside..I'm sorry, but I have to call it by its original title.. A'l'interieur is not only the best of the French new wave, but my favourite horror of the last decade. I LOVE that film. I first saw it at an early hours screening during a frightfest all nighter and it was an unbelievably intense experience.

I was hugely anticipating Livide, but found it ultimately hollow. Pretty to look at in parts, but really quite pedestrian. I could hardly fathom it was by the same directors.

Martyrs I also have a great love for, and I think it's an incredible film. I remember seeing it for the second time in a near empty Parisian cinema with my other half who was traumatised throughout. No subs, but it oddly didn't need it - and that shows the strength of the movie. I also have great love for Pascal Laugier's debut, Saint Ange (House of Voices) which is an excellent haunted orphanage film with almost Fulciesque elements in places. And one that's far superior to modern Spanish chillers like The Orphange or The Awakening.

The Tall Man, Laugiers third and most Hollywood is a neat ideas film, but it's also his least interesting of the three. I liked it, but it doesn't hold up to his two previous films.

The Hunger is a great show. Hopefully you'll enjoy it, trebor.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 7th July 2013 03:01 PM

As for the French horror discussion, I personally prefer both Haute Tension and Martyrs over Inside. All three are much better than the pretty poor Frontier(s), though.

I also didn't think much of Livide. The first half was very atmospheric and creepy, and the film is certainly pretty in places, but it falls apart in the second half and becomes dull, with a dumb, disjointed, anti-climactic ending. Livide was nothing but wasted potential, for me.

It's a very understated film, and a ghost story, so I'd even recommend it to those that didn't get on with Martyrs as it's beautifully shot and acted.

Shell shocked is the word. It was the last film of an all-nighter, playing sometime in the early hours in a smaller, more intimate screen, so everyone was half awake/half asleep while watching this intense film which somehow made the experience more dreamlike (at least it was like that for me and my four companions). It was great; no cheers or whoops form the audience, but the stunned compliance of a sleepy audience suddenly being jolted awake and put through the wringer. There was no boisterousness when we exited the cinema to the bright early hours sunshine of a near deserted West End, just a bunch of blinking people nodding at each other and commenting on what an incredible film they'd just witnessed.

I'll never forget it and it was one of the best cinema experiences I've ever had.

Still Keeping my Ericsson as a backup though. ;)

Oh that's cool. There are films that can be spoiled by that festival whooping. It was great for Troll Hunter, but sort of spoiled Kill List, when the shocking and brutal hammer attack was accompanied by laughing and cheering :mmph: . . .
