I think a 'cult' film can be at times a little difficult to define, especially when you're talking about defining or listing the most well-known and/or 'important' cult films as the more well-known it becomes, well, the less 'cult' it begins to feel.

Dawn of the Dead is a prime example. It certainly has a cult following and status, yet I personally feel it has ebbed too much into the mainstream largely due to continuing exposure/sequels/remakes to be considered 'cult'. There is also the fact that it is in essence a very accessible film in as much it is an amalgamation of genres and ideas - from horror and sci-fi (with its post-apocalyptic overtones) right through to action (it also imbibes the 'buddy movie' vibe) and even romance.

The same can be said for films such as The Evil Dead and Halloween, however those seem to be planted more firmly in the horror camp and therefore do not have as much cross-over appeal.

I watched a film called Dead and Deader yesterday. It starred the lovely Susan Ward as a film geek / waitress and she gave a brief monologue on Dawn of the Dead and studying it in film school because of it's attitudes towards consumerism and the socio-political landscape of 70's America.

To me that's a film that's definitely classed as mainstream.

Indeed.

However the subjectivity of what is termed 'cult' still reigns! I wouldn't even begin to be able to compile a list as I'd be talking myself out of including films I either consider too mainstream or not mainstream enough to be classed as 'top'!
