The new films I saw this year...

Kill 'Em All

Hands down the worst film I saw this year, despite a fun enough premise. Van Damme has never looked so wasted. The fights are abysmal, and the editing and camerawork is awful. The only highlights are Peter Stormare (who is trying to have a bit of fun), and a severely underused Daniel Bernhardt.

Marauders

Dull as dishwater DTV action starring a very sleepy Bruce Willis. Christopher Meloni is good but he can only help so much. I also have no idea what was going on either.

Ghost in the Shell

Tedious adaptation of the manga/anime. There are some decent ideas in there, but it's bogged down by an awful script, choppy editing (I get the feeling this was an R cut down to PG-13), and tired performances. The visuals were underwhelming too.

Kong: Skull Island

I went in with a grin. I came out demanding my money back. Basically, it's a feature length version of a shallow video-game cut scene. Any attempt at character or story development is replaced with loud noises and even louder f**king noises. The most crushing disappointment of 2017.

Logan

The most overrated film of 2017. I don't like superhero films at all, but I was assured that this one was different (although I heard that before). Despite walking in with low expectations, I still struggled to keep myself from walking out. Yes, the acting is very good, but it still suffers from the deus ex machina that plagues superhero films. Characters don't survive because of ingenuity or carefully plotted elements. They survive because the script pulled another contrivance out of its arse. If this the best superheroes have to offer, the whole genre can go to Hell. Just play The Last of Us instead. It covers similar ground but it is more mature.

The Assignment

Disappointing effort by Walter Hill made watchable by its bizarre premise and an excellent performance by Michelle Rodriguez. Sigourney Weaver also gives a committed performance in her odd David Bowie-esque role.

mother!

Decent. Not as good as its supporters say. Not as bad as its detractors say. Its heavy handed approach means that its always entertaining, but never as profound as Darren Aronofsky would like to think it is.

Alien: Covenant

The oddest, most frustrating film of the year. I actually like the film. The bleak tone, the striking visuals, and fascinating themes keep me invested. Unfortunately, the film shits the bed when it becomes an Alien film. I suspect Ridley Scott didn't want to bring the iconic Xenomorph in yet, but was forced by the studio. A shame, as the Neomorph was fascinating and worked better with Michael Fassbender's performance. Also, points for the incredibly dark ending.

Eliminators

A simple thriller enlivened by some brilliant action, a focused script, a strong turn by Scott Adkins, and some really tense direction by James Nunn. This may well be 2017's hidden gem.

Get Out

Very impressive debut by Jordan Peele. The film succeeds in not pointing the finger at obvious racists, but at the disturbing and increasing problem of liberal racism. Get Out is both comical in its absurdity, and chilling in the realisation that it really isn't that absurd at all.

Hacksaw Ridge

Mel Gibson is back (behind the camera)! Hacksaw Ridge may be start off overly mawkish, but it works in the films favour during the second half. Gibson's battlefield is a visceral Hell on earth, brutal and uncompromising. Despite Gibson's religious beliefs, and the film's subject matter, Hacksaw Ridge is not a right-wing ode to prayer, but a tribute to a special man who tried to bring a bit of hope through healing others. I have to admit, I was welling up at the end.

John Wick: Chapter 2

Fantastic sequel that expands on the world created in the first film. The action is beyond incredible, with Keanu Reeves proving once again, that given the right role, is an excellent actor. The gorgeous visuals and driving soundtrack help push a strong script to it surprising dark ending.

Silence

I had given up Martin Scorsese. Since Bringing Out the Dead he has been a shadow of his former self. But Silence has made me excited for his next effort. A powerful exploration of what it is to be Catholic, in that it features lots of tough, agonising questions with no easy answers (it says a lot that there are many conflicting opinions made by Catholic priests about the film). How on earth the earth that Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Tadanobu Asano, and Liam Neeson (his best work since The Grey) were nominated for Oscars, I will never know.

Elle

Most directors sort of lose their knack as they get older. The 79 year old Paul Verhoven bucks that trend with Elle, a magnificent dark comedy-drama following a rape victim that doesn't report her attack. The brilliance of Elle is that the rape isn't the point of them film, but is the kick-off point into exploring a fascinating character (played by an utterly brilliant Isabelle Huppert). My second favourite of 2017.

Blade Runner 2049

Oh, God! I was so nervous about this film. Blade Runner is my all-time favourite film. It also an ending that is hard to follow-up on. So when rumours that a sequel was being proposed, I was disappointed. When Christopher Nolan was being considered, I was livid. Nolan is a man that doesn't understand subtlety, which is integral to the magic of Blade Runner. Scott's involvement made me curious, his employment of Denis Villeneuve instead of Nolan made me even more curious. And somehow, they pulled it off. Blade Runner 2049 is the finest sequel since The Godfather Part II. Not only does it expand on the first film's themes, but it actually improves on admiration of the original film. I was weeping at parts, because Blade Runner 2049 is a wonderful reminder that, sometimes, Hollywood does care about what they release. It's a beautiful poem captured on film. Some may criticise the length, but I can't figure out what could be cut. I loved every second of this film. Take a bow, everybody involved. You deserve it!
