They are weird - They let Arrow release THE FUNHOUSE region free and then a few weeks later told them to lock it.

They didn't force Criterion to do anything - Criterion voluntarily lock all their titles, always have done, always will do.

I believe the new Universal Lynch box is region locked too.

Has that actually been stated by them anywhere? They've released the odd Region 0 DVD and I suspect they're happy to lock and officially keep to a certain region in order to negotiate cheaper licensing deals. I very much doubt given Universal's current licensing record that they would have been happy to let it be released region free.

Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein coming from Universal in September:

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (Blu-Ray)

Looks like it's going to be region locked though

What are Universal doing? Why are they suddenly starting to lock titles?

According to post from member Jerome at French DVDClassik forum, French publisher Elephant Films will release in September/October, among other titles available elsewhere, the following ones:
- Moulin Rouge (1952)
- That Hamilton Woman
- The Thief of Bagdad.
As they are licensed from ITV there is a chance for domestic release.

I actually really enjoyed (?) this, and have the German BD (which is excellent).

An interesting choice of release from Synapse: hopefully it will bring the film to the attention of a much wider audience.
