Bugger, forgot about Master and Commander. An excellent film in my book.

The only other Bettany film i can think of which hasn't already been mentioned is Wimbledon, which was fine for what it was.

I quite liked LEGION actually, rather stupid and ill concieved fun.

Priest was a terrible interpretation of a good manga. Did anyone else notice the plot for PRIEST was totally nicked from THE SEARCHERS?!

Me, I watched REAL STEEL. Certainly lands itself firmly in the catagory of films I expected to hate but actually enjoyed. Like priest nicking the plot for the searchers as a plot-template, REAL STEEL nicks the plot of the origional rocky, so much so I could predict everything that was going to happen. Nontheless its a film with a lot of goofy charm and unlike the dreadful transformers movies it was actually well shot and contained some decent acting and sciptwriting. Not a major classic but good almost old-fashioned entertainment.

Hawkmonger 3rd June 2012 06:11 PM

Captain America: Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. Freaking, awsome! B+

The Forbbiden Zone: Ah, still one of my all time favourites. Utterly dullaly but utterly dalectable! Surprisingly good looking in colour also. A

For a Few Dollers More: :pop2: A

Good times!

Gangster No. 1 ! He was amazing playing the young Malcolm McDowell. Almost made you wish for a Clockwork Orange remake (almost).

He was wonderfully punchable in Dogville . . .

That reminds me; If anyone is interested, THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN is on the horror channel later tonight.

Might watch it as I haven't seen it for ages.

nekromantik 3rd June 2012 11:18 PM

Over the last 2 days I have watched:

Piranha 3DD - It was no where near as fun as the first but still had its moments of fun. if you got time to spare and want to switch off your brain for 80 mins then check it out!

Apartment 138 - This was a english language flick from the producers of REC. its a typical haunted house shakey cam movie. It was average nothing special really.

Project X - This was meant to be a comedy but was not funny at all. There were a few funny scenes but it was not that great of a movie. I enjoyed it but it was quite un-realistic. The portrial of what high skool kids would do to get "popular" was quite stupid.

The Road - This new Phillipino horror flick was quite interesting. It is based on 3 storys that are linked by a road and strange events that happen along it. The first story was pretty good with some very creepy moments, the second story was the weakest as it was more "torture porn" but without the gore. There was not anything creepy or interesting in this angle but you needed to know the story to connect it to the final story which was the best of the 3. It was very eerie and creepy and had some very good performances. Check it out if you like your Asian horror :)

Gangster No. 1 is a superb film and one of the finest British gangster movies of the second half of the 20th century. Paul Bettany overshadows Malcolm McDowell which shows how good his performance was.

Satan Returns (1996)

Turns out this is a Cat IIB and not a Cat III flick after all (even if the MIA dvd cover says otherwise).

Solid and creepy HK demonic thriller with a certain visual flair which comes recommended. :thumb:

The dvd is letterboxed and probably uses the old laserdisc master but considering how rare this is,I was happy with it.

IIB ?some info please

bdc 4th June 2012 10:11 AM

About the rating?

Hong Kong motion picture rating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'd say it's borderline IIB,maybe originally planned as III but I noticed no cuts in the music.

Maybe it was released as a IIB to reach a larger audience (and generate more profit)?

THE INBETWEENERS blu ray
a very funny film:)

Crimson Blade 4th June 2012 12:24 PM

Had a Christopher Lee triple feature last night!
Taste The Bood of Dracula, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, and Scars of Dracula.

Great films! They sure don't make them like that any more.

demonknight 4th June 2012 12:35 PM

What's your favourite out of the three?

Demoncrat 4th June 2012 03:16 PM

Look What Happened To Rosemary's Baby Well, he went and turned into Stephen McHattie according to this effort from '76, with a stellar cast ( Ray Milland, Ruth Gordon........Donna Mills!!;)), some cringeworthy FX (cough bloody cough) this has gone into my top 1000 films merely for the sheer clunkiness of the execution........Recommended!!

Dark Shadows An enjoyable enough romp, some cheeky bits for a 12A, felt it was a bit rushed towards the end though....saying nowt but liked it more that the awful version of Alice.

keirarts 4th June 2012 03:26 PM

Just finished ISLAND OF LOST SOULS.

Still the best cinematic adaptation of the book that's been made, and still incredibly disturbing even now.

Slippery Jack 4th June 2012 03:44 PM

The Body Beneath

Broke into the new Nightbirds BFI Blu and started with the B-Feature. Super cheapo stuff with the expected wobbly production values and performances. Gavin Reed as the chief vampire pretty much makes the film. As pointed out in the Digital Fix review, his resemblance (both physically and performance wise) to The League of Gentlemen’s Reece Shearsmith is uncanny! Whenever he is on screen (thankfully often), the film feels like an extended League episode, and had me smiling throughout . . .

Demdike@Cult Labs 4th June 2012 04:15 PM

Grimm Love

An excellent film about a slightly disturbed young man who fantasizes about eating human flesh then advertises on websites for a willing victim he can kill then eat. Based on a real life case in the German village of Rohtenburg in 2001.

Certainly a dark, and as the title says, grim film, yet well acted, so much to make the viewer symathise with the protagonists. Due to this the running time almost flies by.

Despite its subject there is very little blood on display. It was released Stateside under the Fangoria Frightfest banner, however it has very little in common with general horror cinema.

Highly recommended for those wanting something a little different.

bdc 4th June 2012 04:33 PM

Firefist of Incredible Dragon (Korea/late 70's)

Even though the film is basically about a raped and killed woman taking revenge through her flying heart (or is it her baby's heart because she was pregnant?) and there's a whole subplot of an evil guy who imprisons and rapes young women (a lot of BBFC cuts there) and there's some good gore and weirdness,I'm not that crazy about this one...

Could be me of course, maybe it's not really my cup of tea...too much melodrama maybe?

Think I'll stick with HK films (and maybe a Taiwan one from time to time). ;)

The Boat That Rocked

I've had this sitting on my shelf to watch for many months and finally got round to it last night.

What a pleasant surprise it was. A really enjoyable film with a superb Brit comedy cast and an absolutely killer sixties soundtrack. I think most of the budget must have been blown acquiring the rights to the dozens of brilliant tunes from The Kinks to The Stones.

The film was always fun yet never laugh out loud funny. Its characters were likeable, and Richard Curtis gave them some great dialogue. By the time the boat sank i am sure i was grinning like a hyena.

Good film, yes, but I found myself screaming at the screen when
the boat was sinking, and they had The Who song 'Won't Get Fooled Again' playing on the soundtrack
- a song which wasn't recorded for a good 6 years or so after the film was set

Watched this one last year and thought it was pretty decent. Chingmy Yau is just gorgeous.

Weird one though...a bit nightmarish even... ;)
I thought all the actors were in good form (even Dayo) in this one.

The Moonraker (1958)

Rip roaringly brilliant British swashbuckler starring George Baker (Inspector Wexford -The Ruth Rendell Mysteries) as the hero of the title.

Full of sword play and horse chases this film ticks all the boxes which the Hollywood swashbucklers rarely reached.

The story involves the Earl of Dawlish infamously known to the Roundheads as The Moonraker plotting an escape to France by the future king of England Charles Stuart from under the nose of Cromwell. A film full of intrigue, doublecross, smuggling and as i stated earlier tons of action.

As a reference point imagine Witchfinder General but without the horror aspects with added sword play.

Brilliant stuff.

Glad I'm not the only one who spotted that. I'm sure there's couple of other tunes they play that wouldn't have been released at the time the film is set in. Other than that, not a bad film at all.

I guess they took license with Won't Get Fooled Again, as it was a song about the demise of the 60's dream, which is quite fitting for the end of the film.

And talking of the demise of the 60's dream - where have all the free festivals gone? Big business takes over again. I'm going to start an Anti-Festival. One that doesn't rely on corporate money or fat, rich, lazy musicians who've lost all their creativity in subordination to the Simon Cowell Music World that we all now live in. Rant over. :D

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

keirarts 5th June 2012 07:12 AM

Got home from work late last night and fancied watching something dumb-but-entertaining, so I borrowed DARKEST HOUR. Its about two american lads in moscow when invisible aliens attack and begin killing everyone. It was released in 3D because I guess invisble aliens work better in that format

Fortunately I watched it on blu in 2d.

Imagine a SYFY channel movie on the week where they had just enough cash for some decent cinematography, the ability to clear the streets of moscow for prolonged amounts of time and some mid-level CGI and actors. Well that's DARKEST HOUR. Poor quality screenwriting, idiotic aliens and some hammy acting all present, but god help me I actually quite enjoyed myself. So long as you approach the film with severely lowered expectations you might actually find it as fun as I did.

the film is full of funny scenes, when , I think it was Neil, who was fingering the old tart on the dance floor, and the guy unaware he has shit on his nose
just very funny :):)

Little bit paranoid arent we

I dont know you so realy wouldnt know..

There some people i know and they couldnt pull there own pecker let alone a women .. i just laugh when you go out for a night and next day they are telling someone a real cock and bull story but you kind of feel sorry for them so you dont say anything to ruin there dillusion and not show them up. Thats unless they deserve to be shown up because some people are so full of themselves when they realy are more full of crap just all depends how well you know them or if they are just a friend of a friend and you dislike them so you deliberatly show them up on purpose..
