EMANUELLE IN AMERICA - I didn't feel there was all that much to this mid seventies Joe D'Amato romp beyond the well documented bits of alternative dressage and fake snuff footage... that said, the latter looked pretty gruelling to me and perhaps could've been explored a bit more. Apart from this limited display of nastiness, the rest pretty much boils down to the usual shagging around and would've made for a very dull movie were it not for some nicley 'pop' type aesthetics and dashes of mild eccentricity ie the scene where Emanuelle attempts to evade a gun wielding moral avenger by trying to give him a blow job! In the end though, this mostly tepid flick just doesn't deserve the notoriety it's accumulated over the years, and pales beside a classic like 'Beyond The Darkness', which creates an intensely sleazy atmosphere without ever being nearly as explicit as 'Emanuelle in America'.

Demoncrat 24th July 2012 10:26 AM

The Three Stooges. now i'd heard that there was a biopic coming a while back. either I misheard, or that went by the wayside when someone realised this had been, imho admirably done in the 2000 TVM, the title of which escapes me at the moment:doh:).

This is to all purposes a NEW 3 Stooges film. Now this may be anathema to some fans (for a start it's in colour) BUT i plead with you to give it a chance, the paper thin plot (partly stolen from the Blues Brothers, I don't feel that this is a spoiler as the plot was never the point with the originals, was it??) not withstanding ahem.

AAAnyway. The cast have a fair swipe of the boys to my mind, and the "action" is just as yould expect, with the postmodern edge sublty applied (considering this is from the Farrelly Bros as well!!) for once. The "epilogue" left a slightly odd taste in my mouth, but this is the world we live in now.

Plus Larry David as a nasty nun. S O L D !!!

This is not a GOOD movie. Full of plot holes, contrivancys, and mystical mcguffins. But hell, it's so funny, crap, lovable, and down right amazing that i'm probably gonna order the US BD soon. A great film for fan's of bad movies.

No way would I call THE STORY OF RICKY a bad movie - its very good
ott scenes w/gore - like this film, makes good entertainment:)

Hawkmonger 24th July 2012 12:17 PM

Like I say: A Movie does not have to be good, to be awsome.

A visually stunning and savage dissection of the samurai ethic remade from an earlier film (which I hadn't seen) from the director of communist Samurai classic Samurai Rebellion (which I have seen) This looks the dogs b****ck's on Blu-ray and while incredibly down-beat and tragic it makes a good companion piece/counter point to miike's other samurai movie 13 assassin's.

(funny how miike's films that are made around the same time feature similar themes and images)

Highly reccomended and it was less than a fiver on play with free postage.

The original is available from Eureka/Masters of Cinema on BD and is WELL worth a punt.

James Morton 24th July 2012 01:35 PM

TAKEN - excellent thriller
THE WOODS - there hasn't been a film yet I have liked from Lucky McKee

Um, this biopic about the Three Stooges that you are referring to, which shows the rise to fame of the Three Stooges, whilst featuring some actors in the role of the Three Stooges. You don't think it could be entitled 'The Three Stooges' do you?

I'm a big fan of a lot of the Farrelly brothers films, but THE THREE STOOGES which is cut (kids will copy!) is a disappointment
Yes I know TTS were big years ago (and have fans now) but I always thought they were very unfunny and a bunch of loonies:crazy::crazy::crazy:

Cross purposes, Mr. Morton

There was a biopic about the Stooges made in 2000, which is different to the Farrelly Brothers version (2012)

Gojirosan 24th July 2012 02:05 PM

Well there is guaranteed to be nothing funny about The Three Stooges once The Farrelly Brothers get their bloody hands on them! :censored:

James Morton 24th July 2012 02:12 PM

DUMB AND DUMBER, KINGPIN. THERES SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, ME MYSELF AND IRENE, SHALLOW HAL, THE HEARTBREAK KID, very funny films from them but TTS....

Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin are two of the greatest comedy films of all time. Dumb and Dumber is the second best film of all time, full stop :D

Both excellent comedies. Not sure about Dumb and Dumber being the second best film of all time though.

With all due respect, Mr Fury, I also have to question your sanity!

Gojirosan 24th July 2012 04:31 PM

I have NEVER seen a Farrelly Brothers film that was even remotely funny.

Dumb And Dumber is one of the worst films I have ever tried to sit through. I turned it off before the end it was so crap.

If I had to be nice about them, I would say that Kingpin is fairly well made. But still not funny.

They are awful and their films are awful.

In my opinion, obviously! (Added as it sounded like I was proper on one, when I wasn't really!)

Both brilliant. I have never seen a Lucky McKee film I have not rated extremely highly. I am not sure there are many better horror specialist directors in America today. None come immediately to mind anyhow!

PaulD 24th July 2012 04:40 PM

I recorded The Woods last night on Channel 5. I've only seen The Woman but already have high hopes on the basis of that

Ti West maybe?

The Woman was my definite lowlight of Fright Fest last year :mmph: . . .

Since I seem to inadvertedly caused a shitstorm ahem, :peep: look there is NO sperm or puke in this film. just lots of cartoon vio-lence, interesting to here it's been cut (as I may have seen the full version;);))

I quite like Kingpin.

Not in the same league! I have seen two of his films, one was absolute rubbish and the other was just about OK.

I think The Woman is just about the finest work of American horror cinema in many years.

Ti West is definitely one to watch. That said, I thought The Woman was a fantastically scary and chilling film

Slippery Jack 24th July 2012 05:49 PM

heh. I found The Woman monotonous in the extreme, with a truly awful indie soundtrack that seemed to boom over endless montage sequences. Really poorly directed I thought. Everyone I watched it with hated it too, though it seems to have picked up significant positive buzz since . . .

Yeah, thinking about it, I may have downplayed the good points!

LEMORA - I can't believe it's taken me so long to get around to this wonderful film. This may sound over the top, but watching parts of 'Lemora' felt almost like walking in a dream... the overall look in some respects couldn't be more Bavaesque, and the feeling is as hazy but more fairy-tale. The attitude is more unsettling - it's about an adolescent girl's existential growing pains, and it's difficult to know whether we're in the realm of psycholgy or the supernatural as the two seem blurred here. Whatever, I think it's a unique film, for all the right reasons... I only ever really say that about Eraserheads and Holy Mountains etc. "Impressionistic and really quite spooky" doesn't quite sum up the intoxicating atmosphere of this strange and beguilling movie.

It sounds like a sister film to Valerie and Her Week of Wonders.

Or am i way off the mark?

Valerie's much better, but you're not far wrong in some respects.

Slippery Jack 24th July 2012 06:48 PM

Ach, that reminds me, my Lemora order got nixed in the collapse of Planet Axel. Gonna have to find another sweet deal on it . . .

I have a theory that once in a while certain film makers for reasons unknown, reach across all known boundaries in their films and offer the viewer a glimpse of something "other". As odd and unfashionable as it sounds these glimpses for me are like Shamans returning from the spirit world with tales of wonder and medication for the soul. "Lemora", "Messiah of Evil", "The Child" and parts of Jean Rollin and Franco's films do this for me.

Rik 24th July 2012 08:50 PM

Watched Nekromantik last night, I first read about this in an issue of TDS sometime in 1991 and it's taken me until now to get a copy, a rather strange film to say the least.
