I didn't know that until I checked the trivia facts on IMDB last night while watching, I must've seen it a hundred times since I was a kid too!

It is a really good martial arts film and Bruce Lee was a great martial arts film star. Having said that, I would rather watch Sonny Chiba in any day of the week.

Have you seen Olaf's 'No Reason'? It's based around a well over the top shitpit of hell similar to the one at the end of 'Burning...', but with fake cthulhtic cenobites, a weird colour scheme and some wraparound spiritual bollocks. Oh yeah, and a naked chick who has to get closer to god or something. It's good.

Seeing as I watched both Re-animator & Bride of Re-animator last night, I've decided to give my Arrow DVD of Beyond Re-animator a spin to round off the trilogy, love these films!

Sonny Chiba's films were more exciting, shot with a far greater degree of skill and were much sleazier than Bruce Lee's. I do like Bruce's work though.

A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE.

A sparse and very bleak serial killer movie that dosent pull any punches. I suspect some may find the film a little 'arty' and somewhat alienating with some of its non-linear editing and moody soundtrack but I loved it. Looks great on blu-ray.

DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW.

Re-watched this classic TV movie on Blu-ray. It looks phenomenal and is as good as it ever was. I look forward to further blue-ray releases from VCI on the basis of this release.

DEEP RED.

The blue underground release turned up and I stuck it on to see the much vaunted superiority over the arrow release, honestly I didn't see much improvement. It looks a little sharper but some bits look way too bright and there is still the fine layer of noise over everything. Fortunately the blu didn't cost me much and it fits in to my growing blue-underground collection so no loss. Personally though if I had to pick one release i'd go for the arrow one.

Just watched Intruder, liked it quite a bit but homehow it didnt really work for me. I think the scenes where the killer is watching his victims are the best ones. The gore was pretty good aswell but I thought it would be a better horror movie alover. The acting was decent though.

A beautiful day in Scotland, but I sat in shamefully having a 'dolies blackout'. Don't worry moral guardians of the forum - no porn was diddled over, rather I saw Frankenhooker. My first viewing - I laughed loudly and harrumphed quite a few times, frightening my dog who was lying beside the couch minding his own business.

HAPPY HELL NIGHT.

Generic as hell 1991 slasher movie with plenty of gore, nudity and the awsome Darren mcgavin. A very enjoyable slice of hokum and well worth it for less than a fiver with postage off amazon.

Recommended releases: in terms of versions of the film, I have the R1 which, based on its content, I can pretty safely say is uncut, and is often referred to as uncut in reviews. It's a short film, maybe 70 minutes. As far as I know there's only one R1 out, I forget the studio, think it's 'Groovemedia' or something equally insipid. PQ / AV etc are all standard / fine for a contemporary film of its ilk. Can't remember any extras, but who cares? Do you really want to hear Olaf telling you how a rubber demon having its knob cut off relates to him not getting the right kind of sweets on his sixth birthday etc? I never do, I hate extras, they rip the mystique out of a film.
I remember some reviews stating that a German DVD / Blu-ray release was heavily cut. If true it's a shame, 'cos it seems to have a groovier cover, with a f*cked up mangled face covered in vom.
In terms of bodily secretions, I recommend pissing on a large man in SM gear wearing an octopus mask - think this actually happens in the movie. There's some piss, anyway, and an octopus mask, somewhere.
In terms of spiritual release, hey it's what we're all looking for.
Hopefully covered all dimensions.

I've no real interest in splatter and gore these days but as soon as I read the words 'some piss...and an octopus mask' I'm thinking I may have dismissed the sub genre too early.

I've seen his name many times over the past months and years but didn't realise he'd done that many plot summaries. Maybe works for the IMDB or just sits at his computer everyday typing out plot summaries for films and TV shows he's seen or has read about. Either way, the work he does is generally quite accurate and well written.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - the best of the franchise - brilliant De Palma
RELIGULOUS - Bill Maher's hilarious doc about religion and making fun of everything, and on the way religios nutters get angry :)

Slippery Jack 9th August 2012 02:46 PM

le Havre - Kaurismaki is the man

Demons of the Mind - pretty cool, superb cast - Michael Horden wielding the flaming cross is a truly iconic image

Unless I fell asleep and dreamed it, it's an octopus mask wearing Chas 'n' Dave who're pissing on a bound and gagged Danny Dyer... wasn't gonna tell you, knowing how worked up you get about these things MTDS! Bit of an obvious crowd pleaser from Ittenbach if you ask me, wish he'd stuck with his original vision of Jim Davidson strangling himself with his own cock!

Just watched the excellent Terminator Salvation and seeing the great Michael Ironside reminded me I haven't watched Scanners in awhile, so that is what I'm currently watching. Someone really needs to put out a BD of this, one of my favourite Cronenberg films

ZOMBIE 108 - Absolutely f*cking ludicrous Taiwanese zombiefest which, although badly made on many, many levels, is also highly entertaining and bizarre enough to pass off some counterfeit originality as the real thing. Leaps from a standard zombie takeover storyline to one about a deformed sex pervert who molests babes in chains with a cuttlefish! Didn't think they made 'em like this anymore... potentially a future bad taste classic. Or maybe just the cinematic equivalent of drowning in a septic tank - you be the judge!

Rewatched Bad Lieutenant. N O T the Herzog film btw. Still a flawed masterpiece, was lucky enough to see this at the cinema on release. Now that's acting imo.

99 Women. Franco does it again, hmmm I'm sure I've seen that castle somewhere before you know?;);)
Only sour note was no cameo from the Jesus...c'est la vie. May watch the XXX version later today.

El Topo and Holy mountain blu-rays showed up this morning. THEY LOOK BLOODY AMAZING! Really great looking transfers. Since the anchor bay discs are region locked I presume a company is planning to release them over here. Definately check them out.

THE UGLIEST WOMAN IN THE WORLD - Eccentric Spanish production has a lot going for it - a bit of sci-fi detective drama, a touch of Pythonesque Giallo (formerly ugly person wants to wipe out beauty pageant queens), weirdly Cronenbergian elements - but somehow for me never takes hold. Maybe the problem lies in the 'bit' of sci-fi detective drama, which should actually read 'too much' sci-fi det...etc..etc. Despite the drag factor which set my mind wandering through its less evocative passages, there are still plenty of interesting ideas and striking sequences and scenes - enough to make it a shame that it wasn't great. Still, it's definitely worth a watch.
RETRIBUTION - Pure eighties textures abound in a movie which seems to encompass and concentrate the essence of VHS horror from roughly 1983-1990. I really enjoyed watching this, and frankly would take it over the likes of 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' or any of the 'dream-horror' 'originals' it seems to derive from any day. Some bits are clunky, but so 100% right - a dwarf flips a record at a party, and the whole scene changes - perfection! I'm sure that's a reference to something I'm too cine-illiterate to grasp. And who couldn't love a movie which features an Easter Island Head whose eyes gush blood? Not to mention an immaculately inconsequential appearance from 'Dr Rasta', who seemed like he might be more of a pivotal character at first. A bit of minor treasure rescued from the video graveyard - highly recommended.

James Morton 11th August 2012 01:11 PM

FRANKENHOOKER - saw it on horror channel last night
wasn't bad but no way his best film, would never buy it

mercury 11th August 2012 01:39 PM

Columbiana....Not a bad film but felt a bit flat to me and void of any emotion:(
