Dean Cain in good film shocker!

He plays a white collar worker in over his head after ripping off an especially dangerous crook (voiced by Danny trejo). The film is set almost entirely in Cains car with dialouge over mobile phone as he drives about lost somewhere between california and nevada, his carefully developed plan slowly unravelling before him. Its 80 minutes and engaging for all of it, really keeping the suspense going. Its dirt cheap to pick up as well so i'd highly reccomend giving this one a try.

I remember catching this late on TV years ago and really enjoying it. Must pick it up at some point if its cheap as I'd love to see it again.

Just finished The American Friend, which I really enjoyed, especially the central performances of Bruno Ganz and Dennis Hopper. First time I've seen a Wim Wenders film  but I have Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire waiting in the wings.

Two sublime films lined up there. I don't do lists or anything, but Paris,Texas is up there for my favourite film of all time, just a stunning film. Wim Wenders is brilliant.

I think American friend is the best adaptation of a Patricia highsmith novel out there, actually edges out Talented mr ripley and Strangers on a train for me. Dennis hopper makes an excellent Ripley and Wim wenders sits up there with Werner Herzog, Fritz lang, carl theodore dryer, Robert Wiene and F.W Murnau as one of the great German Filmmakers. (I always get tempted to stick leni riefenstahl in there but don't for obvious reasons.)

Finished the evening up with...

A dramatisation of the massacre of civilians in Rome by nazi forces in repriasal for a bombing that killed German troops. Excellent filmmaking that I had sadly missed until now, mainly because ever since the days of vhs i've seen copies floating about all over the place. The argent version looks great btw. A very tense and beautifully shot movie that manages to present the nazi era in decline brilliantly. Great central performances from all involved including Richard Burton, leo mckern and marcello mastroianni.

What did you think of Rise Of The Gaurdians? I quite liked it.

Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion

Luciano Ercoli's debut. An unconventional giallo in that it doesn't adhere to the usual template of the genre - there's no mysterious killer and hardly any murders. Instead it's a rather more psychological piece as its leading lady (Dagmar Lassander) is drawn into the twisted sexual games of a bladed-cane wielding blackmailer who claims to know something incriminating about her husband, a man of whom she is deeply besotted.

Photos has the usual kitsch charms associated with the genre, and penned by regular Giallo scribe Ernesto Gastaldi is well written. It's all rather tame though, and I personally missed the more wild or sexy moments usually associated with the genre. I also wish I had the Italian dub, as the English track I found slightly irritating - Lassander given a clipped English accent that grates after a while, considering she spends the vast majority of the film whining pathetically over her husband. Fortunately the appearance of Ercoli's wife, Susan Scott, livens things up a little, adding a much needed dose of sexuality to proceedings - especially when she's wandering around her home in a slinky split dress.

I thought it was okay, but nothing special. It's a bit weird to imagine Father Christmas/Santa Claus as a bawdy Russian, the tooth fairy as a hummingbird with a human face and the Easter Bunny as an Australian version of Harvey! It's really well animated map, but I could take it or leave it.

I quite liked all of those, and they may actually have how I picture them.
Especially the Easter Bunny.

To be extremely specific though, South-East Asian tooth fairy is a bit bizarre.

Yes, it is! Three short stories, all of which are really good. Remember the breath-sucking Goblin which finds its match in a cat? Or the story in which James Woods tries to quit smoking and joins the company which takes extreme measures in order to enforce it. Or the one about the cheating guy forced to walk around the ledge of a highrise by the cuckolded, crime boss husband.

Rik 1st April 2013 12:42 PM

I saw it years ago, pretty good adaption of two SK stories (Quitter Inc. and The Ledge)

The One. (2002) Yes, I am still watching anything with Statham in it. Funny to see him with hair hahaha. Reasonable mainstream scifi holum. Surprised to see it was passed uncut, as I did feel parts were trimmed, ho hum.

War. (2007). Hmmmm, exploitation lite imo. Like a HK film made for an american audience was the vibe I kept getting, bizarre twist though cough.

X312 Flight to Hell. Disaster movie directed by Jess Franco? sign me up!! A rag bag assortment of types take a trip into potboiler land, as the cliches fly thick and fast. Truly not as awful as Devil Hunter....see for your selves hahaha.......

The Day.

Good solid post apocalypse drama, nothing too origional but a great car boot buy for me. Like the fact most of the film almost could be in black and white, made it very distinctive.

New York Ripper is a much easier watch compared to Cannibal Holocaust or Maniac (which it bears more resemblance to) in my opinion. Fulci's direction is decent, the story is entertaining and the murders are fairly gory. The killer's duck voice is borderline amusing and makes the film a little harder to take seriously in comparison to something like Cannibal Holocaust. Also Jack Hedley plays the hardboiled/world-weary cop role very well.

Been on a bit of a David Lynch binge. I followed Saturdays Blue Velvet with the extraordinary Eraser Head last night and then Wild at Heart and Fire Walk With Me today.

Mu head hurts. But in a good way. I think I will save the final film in the set, Lost Highway, for another day.

Now if they could sort out Straight Story on blu-ray then my Lynch collection will be complete.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 1st April 2013 07:13 PM

BTW-Lynch fans.
I was in CEX in Glasgow yesterday and they had STACKS of Lynch Blu Ray boxsets brand new for twelve quid!!!!!

Watched SIGHTSEERS last night-superb.Ben Wheatley is definitely the UK's one to watch.Let's hope he doesn't sign up for a Schichael Bay remake...

SCHINDLER'S LIST on Blu...OMG-Incredible! Still as harrowing as it was on first release!

THE HOBBIT-Looked amazing on Blu,but tbh, compared to the Rings films,I found this a bit of a chore to sit through....:behindsofa:

Off now to watch the classic CHRISTINE......:woot:

Been watching tales from the darkside on horror channel cannot believe how utter shite it is, and some of the acting is terrible just watched series 2 episode 9 last night about the possessed girl my wife was in the room I felt embarrassed watching it the girl was a scary as slug and acting was beyond terrible and story was just equally as bad I'm only watching it because George a Romero produced it in the attempt it might Actualy get better, not a series I would recommend

Death Line (1973, Gary Sherman)

Watched this at mate's behest...well, I gave him a choice of this or Happiness Of The Katakuris

Grim, dour, edgy with faint traces of humour, due to Pleasance more than anything imo, this still stands out for me in the midst of myriad "lost tribes/cannibal" titles. Next time....Frightmare!!;)

MIDNIGHT - A bad, but somehow hypnotic movie. Teen on run from perv-copper father hits on unrealistic grocery thief duo, then ends up in a stew of satanic shit via TCM-style family doing bad things to women in cages. Although its myriad flaws should be obvious, there are a number of points in its favour. The grim, ever-brown landscape. The whacky music, which moves from anodyne (but haunting?) eighties synth to broiling industrial electro-psyche. An atmosphere that forever portends dread, almost held at bay by rubbish filmaking, but which manages to seep through in a few vicious scenes. Bad acting, sagging pace, but then just a sense of otherness, a creepiness that draws you in (if you're like me, in which case, I pity you). Bad picture quality, from Arrow. But even this adds to something that works. Despite its lopsidedness and poor dynamics, it hits a nerve buried deep within the infected tissue of late seventies / early eighties nihilism. If Russo had enough $ to make this for real, it probably would've been simply bland. As it stands, this is trance inducing garbage.

ALONE WITH HER - I've heard quite mixed opinions on this low-end camcorder voyage into covert surveillance and stalkerish obsession. A lonely guy picks a victim, infiltrates her home with cheap video devices and insinuates his way into her life. For me, it's not very good, but not bad either. As in, not good, but neither simply rubbish nor inspiringly awful. And yet, not quite mediocre. There was something about it that kept me watching, a tension which I guess followed the creepy premise. The acting was quite good, and the unravelling of the stalker's fixation was handled well (and painfully). The found-film subgenre awaits a truly sophisticated piece of work - there's a lot of potential in the idea of footage-as-material-for film. But, barring TBWP, no-one's managed to get beyond 'Cannibal Holocaust', which weirdly enough appears now as almost a PHD thesis on media deconstruction wrapped in the bad wardrobe of exploitation cinema.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 2nd April 2013 06:17 PM

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? – It's a brilliant film which is still great fun for all ages partly due to the superb animation; I can't think of a film in the last 25 years in which human actors interact so well with animations.

The BD is an improvement over the DVD, but the picture quality is far from reference quality with some crushed blacks and disappointing detail. However, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack – which does sound like 7.1 – is really good, using all speakers for a terrific soundscape.

Bringer Of Funerals 2nd April 2013 06:24 PM

Ive watched My Best Friend's Girl that has Dane Cook playing a man who takes friends ex girlfriends on a date from hell so they end up running back to their ex in a bid to realise what they had lost.

Tasks involve asking their mother to go down on him, going to strip bars with them and paying the strippers.

Watched the new G.I. joe movie last night. Fun Lil action flick. My god was upset by something that happens early in the film. The 3d is horrible though. Saw it in IMAX and it had a bunch of ghosting and blurring.
It's a more ballsy film than the first one. Never got bored and there were a couple surprises. One that really angered my great whose a fan of g.i. Joe.

bdc 2nd April 2013 07:42 PM

I just watched Casino Royale (1967) on bd... :)
Now can someone explain to me how I get to the extras?
As there is no menu?

"As with other recent MGM discs, e.g. City Slickers, Fox has mastered this title with no main menu. The disc goes directly from loading to playback. During playback, the pop-up menu contains an option for "pause" but none for "menu", and any attempt to access a "top menu" produces an error message. After the film finishes, it simply starts again from the beginning. This arrangement is a huge inconvenience for playing extras.

Despite the "bare bones" menu structure, Fox has nevertheless mastered the disc with BD-Java, which wouldn't matter so much except that the ability to set bookmarks has been omitted. No BDJ-encoded disc should ever lack this capability. BDJ prevents the user from stopping playback and starting from the same position, and bookmarking is the only workaround. Its omission is inexcusable."
