Don't knock Rolf! I saw him once in the city centre branch of Waterstones promoting one of his childrens books and he seemed like a really nice guy, despite the fact yours truly couldn't get near The Rolfster as he was surrounded by kids! However, i never liked the guy to the point i joined his 'Cartoon Club' back in the '80s! I have The Loved Ones, Storm Warning, Long Weekend and Wolf Creek but have yet to watch 'em so can't offer a comment at the mo. Road Games Turkey Shoot The Man From Hong Kong Les Patterson Saves The World and The Return Of Captain Invincible (if only for Christopher Lee singing and dancing! No kidding!!). All antique Aussie efforts worth checking out for one reason or another imo and don't forget the Mad Max trilogy too.

I used to prefer Mad Max 2 to the original but now that I am older prefer the grittiness of the original. For me one of the best Oz Flicks ever.

I really like the Australian film Nightmares which was released by Severin a few years back. A rather cool slasher which also goes under the name Stage Fright in some territories. |

An awesome Aussie prison movie is Ghosts of the Civil Dead, directed by John Hillcoat and featuring Nick Cave. Set in a super maximum prison on lockdown it's a stunning debut. It was available back in the day on UK video but the only dvd I know of is Aussie region 4. Just found this if you want to watch! . Edit; I only meant to link to UTube not put it on here so if I've broken any forum rules please delete. |

It'd be interesting to see how many people could now make a case for 'The Babadook'. I actually watched it the other night and honestly was left a little disappointed. Well, 'disappointed' is probably the wrong word to use as I didn't really have very high expectations going in other than that I knew it was getting quite a bit of acclaim on here as well as other places. It was certainly a well-made film in many respects, but I feel the script and in particular some of the acting let it down. Despite it being quite short (I was actually surprised to see a high profile modern film clock in under two hours!!) it still felt a little overlong and drawn out in places. I didn't dislike it though, and on balance there was probably more positive aspects than negative... it's just that I couldn't ignore the negative. My favourite Aussie film remains Picnic at Hanging Rock... Bad Boy Bubby would be a close second though. |

The Horseman (2008) Whilst i can't really make a case for The Horseman being my favourite Aussie film it's probably my fave Aussie revenge flick. At times very brutal it's a throwback to the exploiters of the 70's. The story is a familiar one. - A guy out for revenge when he finds his murdered daughter was killed whilst drugged out and forced to star in a porn movie. However despite the seen it all before main plot it's all done with conviction in that distinct Australian style that allows films from that country to stand out from their Hollywood counterparts. |
