FLESH FOR THE BEAST – not sure whether it was because I was in a bad mood because the disc I have is not anamorphic, as it's supposed to be, so the picture is squashed into a 4:3 frame, or because the acting is appallingly amateurish, but this is plain bad, and not even in a good way.

This is what Frankie said about it. I agree with him that's why i suggested it as a possible purchase in the MM £1 offer.

FLESH FOR THE BEAST – Another one I hadn't seen for a while. 'Flesh For The Beast' doesn't have a very good rep (or much of any kind of rep, really), but I thought it delivered. Delivered what, though? Well, it's kind of trashy, and kind of lame – a bunch of 'paranormal investigators' (yawn already) snoop around in a house where something bad happened. There are three sisterly looking young women around who turn out to be demons or etc etc, and blood is spilled. 'Flesh For The Beast' predates somewhat the mid-noughties thing for grindhouse affectation, so the film is deliberately scuzzed up with superposed crackles and grain. Surprisingly this seems to work rather well, and gives the whole thing the murkily oppressive edge of a knackered 16mm relic from the early eighties. There's also an abundance of gore and bad nudity and a few blurts of hysteria such as a shag / stabbing surrounded by demented close ups of the faces of toys and dolls woooohhh. The bit with the demonesses cavorting nekkid amongst some dudes entrails was also quite erm heightened. 'Flesh For The Beast' – a wretched piece of spew which I'd welcome back any day.

A teen is getting bullied at school for getting filmed giving a bj at a party and yes i was taken back at this skillful writing too. What have i gotten myself into here. After a spit or swallow test with a carton of milk from her bullies she rushes home to rush off the shame but her shaming is far from over when her nurse mother confronts the poor child while she is actually in the shower informing her that this bj will haunt her for the rest of her life i mean come on who writes this shit seriously. While trying to digest the fact that she is bollock naked in front of her mother she adds insult to injury telling her she has offered her services to babysit the kids of a member of the school board becuase you want the teen famous in your school for bjs to look after your kids oh lordy lordy me. Its hard to relive this so soon after watching it so let's move along quickly and get this over and done with.

The evening kicks off with the usual playing hide and seek with the kids eating candy then a bedtime story. Later that night when the house is nice a quite there is a knock on the door and outside stands a kid in a pig mask and a very intimidating adult alost in an animal mask but forgetting the late time she opens the door without hesitation and a third unseen visitor attacks the babysitter. From there is promises to kick off big time but nothing interesting happen at all.

There is nothing original and yes i know its hard to be original in horror but i just felt like they weren't even bothered to try and put their own little twist on it just copy and paste every other home invasion film. The gore in the killing scenes looked good but there was not much of it but practical effects always gets a thumbs up. The acting was weak the plot was terrible and the bj subplot was pointless and the ending was so lame i just laughed.

Stay away from this one not entertaining in the slightest not even a boob to be seen anywhere.

2/10

I agree with Frankie somewhat about Flesh for the Beast, but would have to tinker with the settings of my Blu-ray player so it is putting out a signal for a full screen, deliberately stretching the 4:3 frame from the disc to 16:9. It is bad, but not so bad I'm going to throw it away and celebrate its disappearance!

Gothic (1986)

Ken Russell's nightmarish film of the creation of a Gothic literary classic - Frankenstein. Set at Lord Byron's mansion on the shores of Lake Geneva, Gothic is a wildly imaginative, drug induced tale of wanton excess. Full of hallucinatory scenes of eroticism and horror many of which are taken from classic Gothic literature. The small cast of Gabriel Byrne, Julian Sands, Natasha Richardson, Myriam Cyr and Timothy Spall have a riot as Russell thrusts them down the dark path of their nightmares. There's so much going on here and the film is such a visual treat it's hard to take it all in in one sitting and the film improves no end with subsequent viewings.

Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain (2003)

Lovely Bobbie Phillips (Carnival of Souls (1988)) leads a gaggle of porn stars including Chasey Lain, Ginger Lynn, Jenna Jameson and Taylor Hayes on a field trip to Ireland where they hear about the legendary Sawney Bean clan who are still supposed to haunt the local area.

Wildly gory B-movie excess. A guy gets his intestines pulled out from his anus, Jenna, in true Italian tradition, is delightfully disemboweled (There's a neat gag when the cannibal takes a bite on a silicon breast implant) whilst others are split in half, spit roasted and decapitated, plus of course there's the obligatory Halloween / Samhain 101 and terrible dialogue all round.

Nos will hate this, Frankie will revel in it and MTDS will be calling Sawney, er' Nordy, for some rusty fish hooks. Definitely a film for 'special people'. I love it!

Note - The UK DVD of Evil Breed is supposedly heavily cut. However my dvd from Film 2000 features all the scenes shown here.

#3 Dracula's Daughter :coffin:

I liked this one, but felt like a bit of a cheat for Halloween because it didn't really seem like a horror film apart from that it was a sequel to Dracula. In fact, this starts off with 2 inept bobbies finding the body of Renfield and a pretty upset Van Helsing admitting to driving a stake through the heart of Count Dracula, although it's not murder because you can't kill a man who has been dead for 500 years, der der duuuh!...

The rest was all very dramatic when a mysterious Hungarian lady moves in to polite society circles with an aversion to mirrors... dead giveaway if you ask me... she starts flirting with everyone's boyfriends  I noticed how she never blinked at all when she was talking, she has a magic ring with the power to hypnotise too!

It seems to have the same issue as The Bride of Frankenstein, where it's all context and drama for an hour, then everything all comes to a head in the last 10 minutes then it ends!

Do you think audiences in 1936 never saw it coming that the lead character, Countess Marya Zaleska, was in fact Dracula's Daughter (the title of the film) when she revealed it right at the end

If you want a proper Universal horror then you could do worse than try The Black Cat (1934)

Funnily enough, this is on my radar after watching the Universal Monsters doc on The Mummy disc.
