Julia is a teacher for deaf kids with a secret dark past her twin sister ruined her childhood constantly torturing her physically and mentally. Now that she has a career and a boyfriend who is a doctor things seem to be going great until her uncle convinces her to visit her sister in the mental institute she has been living at. On arrival she meets her uncle and he tells her that her sister is now disfigured after a rare disease has started eating away her face. Trying to hold in her shock at the sight of her sister Mary can see right through her and promises to make her life hell and especially to ruin her birthday something she used to do when they were kids. A few days later Mary escapes the institute and starts terrorising Julia from the shadows so that everyone thinks it is her that is losing her mind. Will the truth be exposed before its too late for Julia.

Let's start with the positives of Madhouse i really enjoyed the story and the parts where Julia is getting tormented in her apartment building. The kills are great and there was no expense spared on the blood for these scenes which is always a plus in films like this.

The negatives were the soundtrack was annoying more the fact is was constantly used in the background even when little was happening well i say soundtrack it was really just an annoying noise that was used over and over again. More than once a scene dragged on and on and on just to pad out the film . When the twist came i wasn't shocked i expected it because of how the character had been carrying on up until the point of the big reveal which is a shame the final scenes look cool but that did take a little something away from it and finally the acting was not great i know we don't expect amazing acting in these films but it was going from bland to eccentric and then to no reaction at all to a horrible incident or a silent emotionless death when a knife was thrust into someone's chest

It's a mixed bag but its still entertaining and i did have fun watching it.

The Church 1989. (Italy, Hungary Germany).

A small village is massacred by crusaders of the church and on top of the bodies a church is built. Years later during a re-vamp pieces of a parchment is found. The new librarian uncovers a cross and removes a symbol and releases the evil.

From producer Dario Argento teams up with Michele Soavi to create a new horror film, although it was meant to be part of the Demons movie sequel this is a stand alone movie.

Hugh Quarshie (Nightbreed, Highlander) stars as Father Gus who seems distracted by his faith and knows he will have to restore himself to fight evil. Tomas Arana (The Bourne Supremecy) stars as Evan who's quest to find the rest of the parchment leads to help breaking loose. Giovanni Lombardo Rice (Cannibal Ferox) stars as the reverend, even though he hasn't much screen time he plays a decent part. Asia Argento stars as Lotte the caretaker's daughter.

This is a decent crafted gothic horror with a blend of a good background score added in by Goblin. The film isn't as tense as it's made out to be but does have its good gory moments and a nice statue pose of the winged snake man by Boris Vallejo's painting.

The Black Cat (1934)

Horror doesn't get much better than The Black Cat. This landmark achievement was the first to double bill Karloff and Lugosi and it's debatable whether either have ever bettered themselves. Lugosi is so sympathetic, never resorting to the hammy style that would blight his later work. Boris Karloff on the other hand has never portrayed evil so magnificently. His performance as the satanist Poelzig is perhaps more Crowley than Poe but it's a performance of pure menace.

From an aesthetic point of view the film is a triumph. From the superb direction of Edgar G Ulmer, to the stunning classical score to the extraordinary Art Deco set design and all topped off by some of the most notorious censor baiting potency of the 30's - torture, drugs, necrophilia, and the final, almost poetic, skinning sequence.

The Black Cat is an eerie, nightmarish masterpiece and my favourite of the classic Universal horrors.

Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011)

Although not a patch on the first film (nor the second film which i also really like) this third sequel, or prequel in this case, is still an effective, sleazy, unflinchingly graphic horror film.

Unfortunately some of the writing and dialogue lets it down at times, so much so as to distract the attention due to some of the characters decision making which is occasionally ludicrous and at times stupid. However, stupid is as stupid does, and all the characters come to a decidedly gory end thanks to our resident mutant cannibals.

As with all these films it's the gore that attracts the viewers and Wrong Turn 4 has it in spades with some really well executed kill sequences which in turn captivate and repulse at the same time. The camera is happy to ogle the neck slicings, limb ripping, decapitations and cannibalism much to the viewers delight. In fact i'm quite sure had this been released during the early eighties it would easily have gone down in cult cinema folklore as a video nasty, been banned by the British censors and been heralded in the same terms as much of the other gory fun we've all come to love.

The Howling 1981.

After a bizarre and almost deadly encounter with a serial killer which left her traumatic, anchorwoman Karen White is advised to take a trip to a mountain resort called "The Colony" but not everyone may not appear to be who they really are.

This has always been a favourite of mine, the film does start off slow but does get better, Dee Wallace's leading lady role as Karen is a great performance as the traumatic news woman who thinks she hears noises outside her cabin. Patrick Macnee plays the doctor who tells her about his colony retreat and with her husband Bill (Christopher Stone) head up there.

The special effects done by Rob Bottin are brilliant on the way we see a hand change from werewolf to human and Eddie's transformation is great. Robert Picardo's play on killer Eddie is quite a bit too creepy in a booths. Villianess Marsha played by Elisabeth Brooks is quite haunting and may seem hypnotic on her prey.

Witchboard 1986.

A young woman becomes obsessed with a Ouija at a party and begins to use it unknowing who she has conjured up.

This isn't a big budget horror but does deliver a decent flick from Kevin Tenney (Night of the demons, Witchtrap), there is quite a bit of detail into the practises mentioned on how to use the board. Tawny Kitaen plays the lead role Linda who is slowly becoming drawn to the spirit world. The film does drag on in some bits bit doesn't loose it's track and has little tense moments which are not boring, worth a watch for 80s cheesy film fans

Whilst still trying to make up a list for this weeks TTT, this will be in there for sure. Two ex soldiers travel England in search of redemption (and some money), working for a shady orginisation whose reach may be further than either suspect. Still quite effective. Haven't seen this? Well, tisn't Misommar for sure

Well, it's horrible to watch alright. Four lads from the wrong side of the tracks find themselves alone and beleaguered in the Lone Star state. Armed with only their wits and their songs, they face off an unrelenting enemy force. Recommended??




The Medusa Touch (1978, Jack Gold)

PG rated film with more blood splashed on screen than TCM????
A writer is mysteriously assaulted in his home. A visiting dectective tries to piece together the puzzle. Was he a deserving victim, it seems?? Ostensibly a film where Burton acts with one other, and the rest (all stalwarts cough) float around like courtiers in his shadow. Remick as stiff as ever (did she train at MFI??), which sort of suits the brittle character she plays, for once haha.
