House Of 1000 Corpses. 2003.

Writer/director Rob Zombie's music has always had a kind of comic book/horror movie sensibility which he translates into his screen project, a tribute to the pioneering take-no-prisoners classics of the 1970's like "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," in fact a prominent role is played by Bill Moseley of "TCM II."

Right at the start we are introduced to gas station attendant Captain Spaulding and his side attraction and very sarcastic which adds in the comedy before we get to the house of horror. The effects of the film, they were all done practical and looked amazing. The blood looks real. We see some of the damage that is done to characters, but it is edited in a way where it does cut away so we fill in to make it worse. The look of the characters as they are just tortured and beaten looks great. I thought the look of Otis played by Bill Moseley was great too. He looks to be albino, but he is so dirty that is kind of hard to tell if he is being serious, flirty or both. Karen Black plays the mother of the clan that is friendly and sadistic at the same time and Sherrie Moon as the blinde angelic looking who lures the unsuspecting victims to the house of horror and never shy's away from showing how tormenting she can be.

Same here. I keep wanting to watch it but have to put it off until later in the month.

I normally watch it early on but promised myself i'd leave it for nearer Halloween this year.

Hellraiser: Judgment (2018)

I was delighted when i saw this had dropped to a fiver on Blu on Amazon so snapped it up.

It has everything i want from a direct to dvd entry in a series which is now 34 years old. It had an easy to follow storyline about two detective brothers tracking a serial killer. It has some seriously fun gore, Cenobites in it a lot (Which can't be said for many of the films in the series), plus some cool new Cenobites as well as one or two from past movies and it also introduces new aspects to Hellraiser mythology such as the Stygian Inquisition which is a fantastic addition.

Although he's not Doug Bradley (His own choice not to be involved apparently) Paul T Taylor is a pretty good Pinhead and new Cenobites such as the Auditor and the Cleaners are as malevolent and merciless as anything from before.

With a running time of 80 minutes Hellraiser: Judgment is quite short and thankfully none of the time is wasted. Because there's so much Cenobite action in a storyline that zips along i think this is the best of the DTV sequels by far and is also a more coherent movie than the majority of Hellraiser films full stop. It's to be commended for adding several new ideas to the series and not simply lamely rehashing what has gone before.

Lost Boys: The Thirst (2010)

This time it's raving vampires!
This is not a good film. It looks cheap, it's poorly acted, the plot is stupid and the soundtrack is incredibly cheesy. I loved it!

Those Lost Boys sequels are definitely entertaining but like you say there's no way you could call them good films despite enjoying them.

The third is better than the second one I think, I will probably watch this one again at some point next year. £8 well spent

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)

Ken Russell's classic piece of Wyrd England is a brilliant example of kinky horror. Based on Bram Stoker's story this is a fun ride as Amanda Donohoe's sexy snake woman seduces all she meets - from boy scout to policeman to Peter Capaldi's archaeologist before ensnaring pretty Catherine Oxenberg with her phallic implements.

Taking in mythology and folklore not to mention monstrous white worms and Hugh Grant's flight attendant fantasies too, the whole thing is one beautifully bonkers, blasphemous and utterly original horror delight.

In 1825, the mysterious Circus of Night enters a sleepy Romanian village cut off from the rest of the world by the plague. The villagers are immediately wowed by the performances which include acts where people transform into wild animals. Suspicions arise when bodies start turning up drained of blood.

For me this is the best film in a small genre of movies which mix the circus with horror. The film has quite a bit of grisly gore and nudity for a Hammer production and was pretty strong stuff for its time.

The circus performances are effectively filmed with very good animal transformations during the acts as well as an extremely memorable display by actual performers Milo and Serena. The film has enjoyable turns from the lovely Adrienne Corri, Lawrence Payne and Thorley Walters, but John Moulder-Brown seems like he needs to go back to stage school.

On the whole Vampire Circus is a successful attempt by Hammer to do something different with the vampire formula in what is a racy, gritty affair with an unwavering atmosphere of doom and gloom.
I love Vampire Circus and am of the lonely opinion that the later Hammers are as good as the original horror films, and in many cases I like a fair few better, The early ones aped the universal stuff too much because they were laying foundations, i much prefer the weird later stuff myself. Great review although anyone that is a massive Dr Who fan and fails to mention Lalla Ward needs to have a word with themselves.
