Haute tension is french and is great. Narrowly missed my top 5 due to the ending. Frontiers and Martyrs are also worth a mention.

Les Yeux Sans Visage (1959, Georges Franju)
Say what you like about Les Diaboliques, this to me is the first modern horror film from France. Franco certainly thought so, remaking it about 5 times cough.
Sooo glad I finally got to see it at the cinema.......

A L'interieur (2007, Bustillo & Maury).
Smack up to date (ish) and possibly the antithesis of the previous choice, this siege film is full on grue and guts. Martyrs might get all the press, but this is still a total experience. ahem.

La Vampire Nue (1970, Jean Rollin)
Still getting over the fact that this popped up on THC (once!! buggers!!). Then having to explain to mate what was the deal. I only pick this because of the multi layered story cough.

And Soon the Darkness (1970, Robert Fuest)
Never go on holiday!!

Fascination (1979, JR)
I only pick this due to La Lahaie.

Surely this is a British film. EMI wasn't it? From Brian Clemens' crew.

Set in France granted.
