I only saw it for the first time quite recently (a year or two ago), but really enjoyed it – some of the negative press from critics was unwarranted. It is certainly darker in tone than I expected.

The book actually reminds me of Apocalypse Now in places. The whole journey to the heart of darkness thing i think.

With the way that message comes across in the film, I wouldn't be surprised if it's intentional and Alex Garland was influenced by Heart of Darkness. The film definitely has a Lord of the Flies-feel, with everyone capable of horrendous actions under the right (or wrong) conditions and circumstances.
