He was, and the way in which Jerry Cantwell harmonised (and occasionally took over the lead vocals) made for a brilliant and unique sound.

I don't usually post new albums I receive, but just want to give a heads-up to any Beefheart fans here that this exists, it's a new edition of Safe as Milk in its original mono form. I'd never been happy with the stereo version because it has vocals in one speaker and music in the other which doesn't sound good, and it was against Beefheart's wishes as well. So this new remaster restores the original version, is in a nice digipak, and doesn't include any bonus tracks - I highly recommend it!

That's in my wish list, along with the other REM albums (I only own Automatic for the People and the two best of albums).

If i may suggest a buying strategy.

I really would start at the beginning with REM. Their sound changed so much as they progressed that the early albums almost sound primitive in style compared to Automatic onwards.

You really can hear their sound evolve as they moved from college radio heroes to stadia filling megastars.

As with Queen, I'm going to buy them in chronological order. That seems the logical way to go as, as you said, you can hear their sound and songwriting develop.
