I considered watching the 2002 series but only heard negative things about it so decided not to sully my memory of the original stories by watching it. Chief among the negative comments was, as mentioned, Forest Whitaker's weird introductions.

Ashamed to admit it but I've only seen season 3 of the 80's series. I'm a sucker for anthology shows but the blu-rays of the original series seem so expensive whenever I have looked online.

I agree with the original series being untouchable sentiment from a couple of people. While Serling didn't write every original series episode, he did have some writers on board that fitted well with the vibe of the series, like Charles Beaumont and Richard Matheson. And of course Serling was ever present with his narration. That's not to say I think everything that followed was bad, but it didn't have that distinct flavour. Serling's dialogue was bordering on poetry at times. |

I think in that respect, Rod Sterling was a bit like Walt Disney as he didn't write or direct every episode but you could tell that it was his show and his fingerprints were all over every bit of material.

My season one box set is upstairs and I really must dig it out and start working my way through the episodes again. Until then, there's YouTube!

Although a fan of the series (my avatar gives it away), I personally prefer the original Outer limits.

Serling.... Yes I'm working my way through the first series of Night Gallery at the moment. I find it a bit more hit and miss but generally enjoyable. I understand behind the scenes the show was always in turmoil, and Rod Serling never had as much control over it as he did with The Twilight Zone. It has a bit more of a supernatural slant to it, which I guess is good; it gives the show its own identity, but I think I much prefer The Twilight Zone. |
