They are both horror films and both comedies. It's just that the sequels are more obviously comedy. I don't know how anyone could think the first one is not a comedy.

But it's funny too! I'm not denying it is a horror film (though not scary, really), but surely it's obvious it is (intentionally) a comedy as well?

There's intentional comedy there, yes, but IMO not enough for it to be classed as a comedy.

Completely agree – although it isn't particularly scary now, I imagine it was quite an experience 30 years ago when it was prosecuted as obscene!
