Episode 23

Voice From the Past

By Roger Parkes.

Its two years since Blake was tried and deported to Cygnus Alpha, voices from the past are beginning to haunt him again. Avon, Cally and Jenna conclude that Blake is being manipulated by artificial telepathic transmissions. Blake with the aid of Vila imprisons the others as the transmissions instruct him to go to asteroid PK 118. There he meets a group of old rebels and a new one, Arbitor General Ven Glynd, Ven Glynd was part of Blake's trial but who has since defected. Ven Glynd has evidence which will discredit the Administration and thus allow Blake to achieve his dreams.

Unfortunately for the rebels Servalan is preparing a trap for them and Ven Glynd's associate Shivas might not be who he seems.

..................

Another episode where a crew member is possessed it seems. Although a recurring theme it doesn't happen in Blakes 7 as much as it was utilized in Space 1999 for example. What is pleasing about the episode is the telepathic messages this time are a Federation plot rather than the usual alien race. Shivas is clearly Travis from the first meeting as his voice is exactly the same. Surely one of the crew may have noticed this. What made me smile was Travis's stubble when he emerged from under his disguise. By the looks of things he must have been wearing it ages.

Despite its dodgy opening Voice From the Past turns out to be a really enjoyable episode with tensions rising as the story proceeds.

Episode 24

Gambit

By Robert Holmes.

Freedom City - a Las Vegas in space. Blake, Cally and Jenna teleport there to search for Docholli who they are lead to believe knows the location of Star One. On board the Liberator Avon and Vila aren't too impressed that they are not enjoying the pleasures of Freedom City and with the help of Orac come up with a plan to break the bank at Freedom City.

Unfortunately for Blake, the now renegade Travis is also looking for Docholli as is Servalan with an elaborate plan to find Star One and kill Blake and Travis in one swoop by planting a bomb in Travis' cybernetic arm.

As it turns out Docholli doesn't know the location of Star One but he does send then to the planet Goth where a tribal chief is supposed to possess the brain print of a man called Lurgen who knew the location.

.......................................

Gambit has a fine guest cast including John Leeson (K-9), Aubrey Woods and Deep Roy as Klute, who is probably best remembered for playing Mr Sin in the Doctor Who story The Talons of Weng Chiang.

Legendary Doctor Who writer Robert Holmes has penned a fine, fun story in Gambit. The Avon and Vila subplot is a hoot and really makes the story enjoyable. The miniaturized Orac at work in the city is almost like baby Orac. Freedom City has some great outlandish characters wearing even more outlandish costumes from the Regency period. All these aspects are in contrast to the more serious nature of the Docholli storyline. Another excellent episode.

Episode 25

The Keeper

By Allan Prior

Blake, Vila and Jenna teleport down to the planet Goth attempting to find the brain print that will lead them to Star One. Jenna and Vila are captured by the locals - The Goths, a medieval people. Their leader Gola demands Jenna be his wife and Vila his new fool.

Unfortunately Travis and Servalan are also on Goth searching for the brain print. Meanwhile aboard Liberator Avon is convinced a Federation ship nearby is Servalan's and battles with Cally as to wether to go after it thus taking the ship out of teleport range.

Travis escapes with the brain print that was on the back of a medallion worn by Gola, however Blake and the others escape with the coordinates to the prize as well.

..........................

A story which gives Jenna (Sally Knyvette) the spotlight for a change. She has to charm Gola and appease the soothsayer in order to find the medallion, or she may end up the warlords wife. She also looks stunning throughout the episode be it in her usual leather attire or made up to be the queen of the Goths. Vila's role as the court fool or joker is perfect for Michael Keating, his comic timing always to the fore.

Allan Prior must have a one track mind, as here we have yet again, a script by him concerning local tribesmen.

Bruce Purchase plays Gola the Goth leader. He also played the Pirate Captain in the Doctor Who story The Pirate Planet. Here he gives pretty much the same OTT performance as he did opposite Tom Baker.

This together with the last episode Gambit and the final episode of season two, Star One make up a three episode story arc. Unfortunately The Keeper is a pretty pointless exercise, full of tedious bawling by men in furs and leather with about twenty seconds of need to know plotlines.

Nah, he's too busy swishing the feather-boa of his favourite Servalan outfit around his neck, whilst pointing into the mirror shouting,"I am the federation!"
