"A never-before-seen and newly restored cut of Francis Ford Coppola’s spectacular cinematic masterpiece in a way which the director believes “looks better than it has ever looked and sounds better than it has ever sounded”.

Apocalypse Now was nominated for 8 Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and won 2 Academy Award for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, 2 BAFTAs for Best Direction and Best Supporting Actor and the Palme d’Or in Cannes. Starring Academy Award winner Marlon Brando (1972, Best Actor, The Godfather), Academy Award winner Robert Duvall (1983, Best Actor, Tender Mercies), Golden Globe winner Martin Sheen (2001, Best Actor – TV Series, “The West Wing”), Academy Award nominee Dennis Hopper (1986, Best Supporting Actor, Hoosiers), Academy Award nominee Laurence Fishburne (1993, Best Actor, What’s Love Got to Do with It), and Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford (1985, Best Actor, Witness), the film follows Army Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a troubled man sent on a dangerous and mesmerizing odyssey into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade American colonel named Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has succumbed to the horrors of war and barricaded himself in a remote outpost.

The best visual and sound technologies have been used to present Coppola’s true vision of the film: one that delivers deep, visceral visual and auditory impact. “The audience will be able to see, hear and feel this film how I always hoped it could be-from the first ‘bang’ to the final whimper” said the film-maker. All three versions of this film are available on this release including Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut, Apocalypse Now: Theatrical Cut, and Apocalypse Now Redux Extended Cut.

Restored from the original negative for the first time ever, Apocalypse Now Final Cut is Coppola’s most complete version of his multi-awarded classic. This is the first time the original negative has ever been scanned and over 11 months and 2,700 hours were spent on cleaning and restoring the film’s 300,173 frames. Brought to life through ultra-vivid picture quality with Dolby Vision, delivering spectacular colours never before seen on a screen, with highlights that are up to 40 times brighter and blacks that are 10 times darker. It has also been mixed in Dolby Atmos to offer a truly immersive sound experience and it has been enhanced Meyer Sound Laboratories’ newly developed Sensual Sound, a technology engineered to output audio below the limits of human hearing."

I've just ordered it as well.

Sometime I think extended versions for what the run time worth on odd film doesn't make much difference really , its different if say eg alternative ending etc . but a lot of films its just extended scenes or extra dialogue . but been that long since I've seen this I've got no idea anyway

The Redux version of the film has a long sequence on a French plantation. Although it's a fascinating look at the history of Vietnam, I'm not overly enamoured with it because you are taken away from Captain Willard's journey upriver, though perhaps that's the point and you want to go back to the madness.

That's the one part of redux I don't enjoy

I've actually had problems with playing the 4K UHDs in that US Apocalypse Now set. All three versions of the film, stuttered and froze in my Sony UPB x700 player. Luckily the other 20 UHDs that I own, play just fine. It must be some sort of player compatibility issue, I'm hoping for a firmware update to fix it. It's a shame because (when the film is playing okay) it looks absolutely stunning in 4K.

Just wanted to say that I updated the firmware in my Denon receiver and now the theatrical cut of Apocalypse Now plays perfectly. Sadly Redux still freezes a bit over 2 hrs 3 mins in and requires either a fast forward or pressing pause and then play again. Haven't tried final cut yet (since updating my receiver). Obviously I am chuffed to be able to watch theatrical cut without issues.

At time of writing, Arrow UK have got the 2-disc blu-ray Arrow release of 'Oldboy' for £7.99

"BLU-RAY TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION: OLDBOY + OLD DAYS

Often cited as one of the best films of the 2000s and possibly the definitive example of extreme Asian cinema, Oldboy is a brutal, lyrical modern classic of the revenge genre.

Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, the film tells the horrific tale of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a businessman who is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration. Eventually released, he learns of his wife s murder and embarks on a quest for revenge whilst also striking up a romance with a young, attractive sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). He eventually finds his tormentor, but their final encounter will yield yet more unimaginable horrors...

Directed with immense flair by Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden) as the second instalment of his Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy blazed a trail at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival where it was lauded by the President of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino. The film went on to become a huge international smash, blowing audiences minds with its concoction of filmmaking virtuosity, ingenious plotting, violence and pathos. Now, this masterpiece has been newly mastered in 4K and is presented here in a two-disc set with a wide array of extras, including the feature-length documentary Old Days."
