Pan’s Labyrinth always puts me in mind of the early 80s, when I rented obsessively from the video store and watched a lot of the glut of fantasy films that were floating around then. Del Toro’s picture stirred memories of movies like The Dark Crystal and Company of Wolves. The latter film in particular came to mind, another movie that plays adult games with children’s stories.
Here’s a famous clip from the film that introduces a truly terrifying new boogeyman into the book of fairy tales.
