Battle Royale is such a hip slice of teen cinema that it can come as a bit of a surprise to learn that it was the final finished work of an aging veteran of the Japanese film industry. Kinja Fukasaku had been directing pictures since the early 60s, most memorably with a series of tough, documentary style Yakuza films in the 1970s.

In the playlist below, you’ll find several examples of this great filmmakers work, Including the eccentric and camp Black Rose Mansion, a truly wigged out Sci-Fi movie, examples of his sterling crime output, some efficient martial arts pictures and a little Heroic Bloodshed.

Arrow Video’s Battle Royale Limited Edition DVD and Blu-Ray will be released on 13th December 2010. Both format releases feature brand new restored high definition transfers of both the Theatrical Cut and Director’s Cut, brand new subtitle translations, limited edition packaging numbered #/5000 with certificate and a whole host of new and exclusive extra features.
