Argento’s Phenomena is out now (07.03.2011) on UK DVD and Blu-ray so now it’s time to take another look at Argento’s 80s classic, a film that seems update Italian Horror style for a generation growing up with MTV. Certainly, the heady blend of 80s pop, Heavy Metal and prog-leaning horror music helps with that impression. I like the mixture of gory set pieces and wind machine fantasy sequences. As WTF Film points out in their review, the close-up insect photography is mighty impressive as well.

Phenomena is one of Argento’s most head scratchingly trippy movies and it’s all the better for it, horror movie work best for me as fevered nightmares rather than gruelling exercises in grim bloodletting. But’s that just the vague opinions of one PR droid, slaving away deep in the bowels of the secret Cult Labs video shop….

So check out the reviews, let’s see what the critics are saying…

“For this release Arrow Video restores the film to its full length version 116 minutes. Now that Dario Argento’s preferred cut of the film. Phenomena can finally be viewed with fresh eyes”. – 10K BULLETS

“The final act begins with some prime Argento-style battling with the killer before segueing into something that not many will be prepared for, featuring swarms of killer flies, decapitation, and the most mental monkey wielding a straight-razor that you’ll ever see. It really is something to behold.” – DREAD CENTRAL

“This is an absolutely beautiful film from start to finish, with plenty of stunning location shooting and razor-sharp insect macro photography to ogle over, not to mention Argento’s usual fetishistic lingering over the shiny metal murder weapon.” – WTF FILM

“This Phenomena Blu-Ray is chimpin’ phenomenal. A fantastic, frightening fantasy on yet another beaut of an Arrow release, I love those guys – they plough so much effort and love into every disc they release, making them real treats to fans and noobs alike.” – FILMSHAFT
