INSIDIOUS (cert. 15) will be released on DVD (£15.99) and Blu-ray (£19.99) by Momentum Pictureson 12th September 2011

Insidious, like many 21st century horror movies, openly looks back on it’s influences, playing games with classic horror ideas and presenting the kind of old school thrills that sometimes seem lacking in some of the more nihilistic genre entries.

A big influence on the movie was The Entity, starring Insidious actress Barbara Hershey. The Entity strays from Hollywood ghost story convention by having a haunted individual as opposed to a location. This is an idea that Insidious develops as a small boy becomes the target of something evil from the other side.

The Entity is a very dark movie, dealing as it does in an unkind spirit that repeatedly sexually assaults a women. Insidious is far more of a ghost train nail biter and much more fun but that central idea, of a person carrying a psychic monkey on their back, is updated and stirred up with elements from The Poltergeist to create a new film that simultaneously looks back and offers hope for more eerie paranormal films with a light touch to help temper the flood of grisly splatter.

Barbara Hershey’s presence as the grandmother of the unfortunately afflicted kid makes the connection between Insidious and it’s 1982 forebear explicit… It’s not just Tarantino who can cast genre icons as tributes to classic cinema.
