Blood Car is a movie laughs at our sometimes uncomfortable relationship with the world’s favoured mode of transport. In the movies, cars often represent freedom, an escape from the restrictions of family or a small town. The are the freedom of the open road and in Hollywood terms, they’re an embodiment of the American dream, a rite of passage. They’re are first kisses, steamy windows, races against the clock and a barrier against the cruel world when a character just needs to break down and cry.

One thing they generally aren’t is the killer protagonist. Sure, cars are used as weapons in any number of action movies but it’s a rare film that hands to power of ignition to the vehicle itself. Here are some hit and run examples…

Christine

John Carpenter’s excellent adaptation of Stephen King’s novel is much more that a novelty movie about a self-driven car on a killing spree. Carpenter’s mixture of classic rock n roll music and electronic movie sets the scene for a movie in which a classic, bullied high school nerd forms a symbiotic relationship with a beaten down old 1958 Plymouth Fury, a classic car with a blackened soul.

As the loner spends time with the car, the bitterness of the boy feeds the bloodlust of the car. As the boy grows more confident, so the car begins to heal itself. Locked in a weird dance, the two become co-dependent. See, much more complex than simply having a big old car plow down jocks, although horror fans still have plenty to look forward to.

The Car

A less successful motor-kill movie than the minor classic Christine, The Car is at least entertaining in it’s modest way, despite offering little by way of explanation for the reasons why a small American town might be undergoing serial hit and run murders perpetrated by a satanic Lincoln Continental.  A 70s curio where the car provides the most satisfying performance.

The Hearse

A riot of haunted house cliches and cookie cutter spook show frights, The Hearse does at least have one thing going for it, a really creepy hearse. Aside from that, it’s your standard video store rental of the period but there’s a ghostly thrill to be had watching the heroine being chased down the road by a hulking corpse-carrier with an evil streak and a lust for blood.
