THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 12 AUGUST 2011

HELLO AGAIN!

A cure to those rioting blues. Meow.

Welcome to another weekly Newsletter cram packed with all the latest and greatest news straight from the Cult Labs Kingdom. Horray! But before we crack on it’s time for a serious note. As I’m sure you’re all well aware, London and other parts of the UK have been under attack from idiotic rioters, looting and destroying everything in sight. So first of all I hope everyone reading this and all your friends and family are safe during this time. It looks like the worst has past, but just take it easy. Secondly, Arrow and Shameless have each released an official statement this week in regards to these events. With the looting and burning down of Sony’s distribution centre in the not-quite-so peaceful Enfield, much of the stock has been destroyed. What does that mean for you cult film fanatics? Well unfortunately some title’s release dates may have to be pushed back in order to restock. These include Arrow’s much awaited release of Midnight and Shameless’ Don’t Torture A Duckling which, as Sarah highlights, ‘there is a chance the release date may need to move back from 29 August as there will be disruptions throughout the industry.’ To keep up to date with this check out the official statements posted here (Arrow’s) and here (Shameless’) for all you need to know. Hmm, this is a rather depressing start to a newsletter. So here’s a picture of a kitten to lighten the mood. Everyone say “aww.” Feeling better? No? Well let’s crack on with the newsletter – what better therapy than some movie talk?

ALL THE BEST THINGS OUT NOW!

Asian remake of the Harry Potter series is slighty more bad-ass.

This week’s release is bound to get you excited, so before continuing I urge you all to sit back, take a deep breath and prepare for your mind to explode with awesomeness. Yes, that’s right it’s none other than the action-obsessed, sword-swinging, horse-battling, spear-throwing, wall-leaping, Yen-tastic, Pony-tail-enthusiastic, holy-moly-did-you-just-see-that, ass-kicking epic, The Lost Bladesman (Icon, DVD & Blu-Ray). Galloping into your local high-street this week comes the brilliant historical martial art film from the mind of Donnie Yen (perhaps best known for Hero and IP Man) which critics have described as ‘brimming with action’ (Twitch Film) with ‘impressive vistas and gorgeous scenery’ (BeyondHollywood.com). So if you fancy a balls-to-the-wall fighting film this weekend, then look no further than this. And as always, the Kingdom of Cult Labs is the place to go if you want more info. Besides the official forum threads here and the hubsite here, Sam has written up some brilliant blogs too, including an exclusive clip and concept art of the weapons used. Hell yeah! If you fancy some more similar Asian Action then jot down this into your diary. The 5th of September sees the DVD and Blu-Ray release of 13 Assassins (Artificial Eye)! Oh yes! For more info on this upcoming release head to the Hubsite or the Official Thread and all your questions shall be answered.

COMING SOON TO A SHOP NEAR YOU…

Dare you watch?

If however you’d prefer a film with a little more fright, a little more terror and a little more chance you’ll have a heart attack through exposure to intense horror, then check out the latest blog on the smash box-office hit Insidious (Momentum Pictures, DVD & Blu-Ray) here. For those not in the know, Insidious (from the makers of Saw and Paranormal Activity) blew away audiences upon its original cinematic release earlier this year. With its old-school horror vibe and continual intense terror, this film immediately gained a huge buzz and was labeled one of the scariest films in a long time.  Of course, I wasn’t scared in the slightest (he says as he types from under his covers). Well the DVD and Blu-Ray release of this is set for the 12th September, so plenty of time for you to build yourself up and bravely watch it again. Visit Sam’s blog by clicking this lovely little link to find out more…if you dare.

Everyone loves a good ghost story, right? But perhaps you enjoy your movie entertainment slightly more gruesome, gory and grueling? Then look no further than the bloody slasher sequel Hatchet 2 (Arrow Films, DVD & Blu-Ray) from director Adam Green and staring those two horror icons Mr. Tony Todd and Kane “Voorhees” Hodder. Planned for release on the 29th of this month, the mini-forum and blog will keep you entertained until the final blood-splattered showdown. Haven’t seen the first Hatchet? Well, this is the perfect excuse. Go on, treat yourself. You know you want to.

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE LABORATORY…

As always the Labs is a buzz with chit-chat about all things cult. So, here’s just a quick taster of some of the best threads this week.

  • Bargains At Poundland – Although an old thread, it has lately been the home to lots of bargain spotting for all you Poundland fans. So if you’re tight on money then why not pop in here, say hello and get informed of all the latest and cheapest DVDs. Although having said that, what with these riots, you’d be lucky to find a shop with much left in it. But looting Poundland? Really? Really?! …Really?!!
  • Music Forum? -  Who would like one of these? Are there enough music fans on the forum for a music section to work or would it be just ANOTHER section? Personally, I think it’s a great idea, I mean who doesn’t love music (read: Judas Priest). So get those dancing shoes on, cha-cha slide your way to the thread and let us know. If I could, I would have a whole mini-forum dedicated to Judas Priest, but that’s just me. P.S. Listen to Judas Priest!
  • Troma – If there’s one man who could go down in history as one of the kings of independent sleaze, it’s got to be Lloyd Kaufman. The almighty Troma! Sure most of their films are terrible, but they’re also so much fun. From Surf Nazis Must Die to The Toxic Avenger to Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead – what are your fav Troma films?

WIN! WIN! WIN! BECAUSE WE’RE GENEROUS LIKE THAT…

Win me and worship my facial hair.

Fancy getting your hands on some free stuff without the hassle of wearing a pathetic balaclava and risk of injury? Well then look no further than the Labs for we have just the thing for you! First off a huge congratulations to The Blob, Darthelvis and BioZombie for winning Hobo With A Shotgun last week with a mega hangman marathon and an even bigger round of applause to Competition veteran Mark Meakin, Darthelvis (again! Lady Luck sure was on your side) and PaulD who each won the huge bundle of prizes in the Birthday Competion!

  • Weekly Competition – Win The Lost Bladesman on DVD or Blu-Ray here! Be quick though, the comp ends this Sunday (14th). There’s three copies up for grabs for three lucky winners, and three ways to win this week – so enter away! As per usual, the competition is open to anyone and everyone, all over the world – there’s no limitations so there’s no excuses!

WELCOME TO THE GRINDHOUSE!

Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the master of cult screenings, Mr. BioZombie…

This week we have some great stuff to promote at The Grindhouse Project: including giant apes and ageing violent cowboys . I try to get stuff from all of the UK to tell you about, but if there’s nothing in you’re local area I advise you to go to your local cinema and annoy the management until they programme some kick ass Cult Classic (please don’t annoy anyone too much). BioZombie

The Scala Forever season starts off with the first film the Scala Cinema ever screened, and there’s a party too!

Pekenpah’s epic western was made to be seen on a gargantuan screen, especially the sqibtastic ending!

Badlands is badass!!! See what I did there, so now go and see it.

Cult film demands to seen on the big screen with an appreciative audience, so head over to The Grindhouse Project and give in to that demand (or else).

So that’s it for another newsletter! Hope you enjoyed it and as always any feedback or ideas would be great! There are so many ways you can get involved with all the cult film fun at Cult Labs:
