THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 02 SEPTEMBER 2011

CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE!

Bang Your Head!

As I type this I have Quiet Riot‘s cover of the Slade classic screaming out of my speakers (blasted all the way up to 11 of course) whilst I make some chocolate crispie cakes. Nom nom.  What’s that got to do with this week’s  newsletter? Absolutely nothing. But I never know how to start these things. So what the hell, sing along everyone! “Cum on feel the noize, girls rock the boys, we’ll get wild, wild, wild. Wild, wild…” etc., etc. Well done, have a cake.

And now the news…

ALL THE BEST THINGS OUT NOW!

Three big titles hit the stores this week and each one is brilliant in it’s own way. “What are they Kyle? What can they possibly be?” I hear you cry with my telepathic powers.

You've got red on you.

Well, let’s kick it all off with a brand spanking new release from Shameless, in bright yellow…naturally. If there was one name synonomous with Italian exploitation its got to be Lucio Fulci; the man who stuck a flesh-eating zombie into shark invested water and created undead cinematic history. Well, now thanks to Shameless Screen Entertainment, you can own the film he described as his personal favourite of his work. Of course, it’s the one, the only, Don’t Torture A Duckling! Featuring a story with more twists and turns than a corkscrew and containing scenes and a theme that is still shocking and powerful today. Who’s responsible for all these kiddy killings? You’ll have to watch this masterpiece of a giallo to find out. You’ll be ducking quackers if you dont! Check out this link for all the information on this DVD  release. Also out this week is the new slasher film Hatchet 2 (Arrow Films: DVD & BD)! Straight from the warped and twisted mind of Adam Green, this film features a brilliant cast that any self-confessed horror hound will be excited by. Check out the movie’s official mini-forum and blog for more details.

This week has also witnessed the release of another DVD box set of one of the greatest prison set shows in television history. Stick a bunch of criminal women together with a group of often sadistic guards and, well, things are going to get pretty interesting. Yes, that’s right it’s Prisoner Cell Block H , Volume 9 (Shock Entertainment & FremantleMedia Enterprises: DVD). Is it the best series? Well that’s a tough question! Nearly as tough as Vinegar Tits. What do you think? What’s your fav Prisoner year? Who’s the greatest inmate? Are you scared of the evil Freak? Join in the conversation over at thePrisoner forum!

COMING SOON TO A SHOP NEAR YOU…

But if none of those releases float your boat, then fear not – there’s a heap load of stuff coming your way in the not too distant future. Just take a look at all these lovely titles…

- Pieces (Arrow Video: DVD). Like slashers? Like gore? Like unintentional humour? Then you’re going to love this film! A true cult film, there’s no denying that. Cram packed with buckets and buckets of lovely red stuff and scenes that are so ridiculous they break the WTFometer. Cult cinema doesn’t get much better than this film and when packaged with reversible artwork, a cracking booklet and some rather nice extras, this is one DVD not to be missed. The Mini-Forum can be found here.

- Midnight (Arrow Video; DVD). Another exploitation gem from Arrow Video released the same day. This’ll make a fantastic double bill with Pieces! This criminally underrated backwoods Satanic horror is directed by none other than John Russo – the writer of the momentous Night Of The Living Dead and stars a certain actor from Romero’s Martin too (another Arrow Video release). Midnight‘s offical mini-forum can be found here.

- Insidious (Momentum Pictures: DVD & BD). Slightly more mainstream than the other two aforementioned titles, but nevertheless a true horror gem. Upon its cinematic release not too long ago, this film became a huge success a sent shivers down audiences spines. Dare you watch this film? I know Nekromantik is a huge fan of this film – are you? If so, head on over to the film’s Official Thread and Blog.

- Cannibal Holocaust (Shameless Screen Entertainment: DVD & BD) – There are many films that are so notoriously disturbing and shocking that a short introduction wouldn’t do it justice. This film is, however, not one of those. Oh no. This film is so notouriously shocking that an introduction is not even needed. I have said enough. Visit here or here (they both lead to the same place)  for more information if you can stomach it, of course.

- Danger Mouse (FremantleMedia Enterprises). Thank godness, something to lighten the mood a bit. Were you a fan of this cartoon show back when you were a young tiddlewink? I’m sure you were. Well relive those nostalgic memories with this excellent – and huge! – box set. Visit the fan site here!

CULT LABS FILM NIGHT!

Quick, grab a pen! Grab your diary! Make a note of this: “I will attend the totally awesome in every way Cult Labs Film Night this month.” into the 5th of September section. You’ll be crazy to miss this – it’s always great fun. So, if you can, drop by and give us a visit. The Mini-Forum.

THERE’S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE LABORATORY…

Stupid title really. I mean there’s ALWAYS something going on at the Forum. Don’t you people ever sleep?! Well anyways, here’s just a few brief threads that have been active this week that have caught my eye. Enjoy!

- What are your most collectable discs (ie, autographs, LE, etc.)? Pretty self-explanatory title right there. bgart13 has created this brilliant thread dedicated to the very best of the best collectable goodies. Don’t be shy – come and show off your most prized possessions!

- Diary of an International Film Hunter. Follow SShaw‘s journey on his own thread as he lets us know about some great new up and coming horror film releases. Take a read and see what films you should keep an eye out for, or to avoid like the plague.

- The Shameless Website – Shameless have a new look to their site! What do you think of it? Sexy? You bet! Take a look and let us know.

WIN! WIN! WIN! BECAUSE WE’RE GENEROUS LIKE THAT.

Fancy saving yourself a few bob in these hard times we live in? I bet you do! Well besides stealing, there’s only one way to do that. My competitions! Woo! This week’s prize is the already mentioned Hatchet 2 – on DVD or Blu-Ray. All you need to do is send in the most ridiculous, wackiest and stupidest weapon a slasher villian could possibly use. So far we’ve had pies, dusters and…a dildo. Whatever rocks your boat, I suppose. Think you can do better? Prove it by entering here.

WELCOME TO THE GRINDHOUSE!

And now a few words from the all-round great guy, BioZombie!

Once upon a time in the west, a hobo with a shotgun teamed up with a Lady Vengeance to bring an amazing line up of grindhouse cinema to the lucky people of the UK. So, if you don’t want them knocking on your door I suggest you go and meet
them on neutral turf: the cinema.

- 2nd September 2011 ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST Ritzy Brixton – London – If you haven’t seen this Spagehtti Western masterpiece on the big screen, you really haven’t seen it at all.

6th September 2011 HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN Cube Cinema – Bristol – Blasting on to the big screen with enough guts and gusto to fuel three grindhouse flicks. A must see!

- 9th September 2011 LADY VENGEANCE Ritzy Brixton – London – The unsettling finale to Park Chan-wook’s sublime vengeance trilogy plays this week at the Ritzy in Brixton.

Cult film demands to seen on the big screen with an appreciative audience, so head over to The GrindHouse Project and give in to that demand (or else).

Y’hear that? ‘Or else.’ He ain’t kidding – BioZombie’s an expert with his machete. Trust me, you wouldn’t want to double cross the man of The Grindhouse Project. So head to the links above – your life may depend on it.

So that’s all for this week. My cakes are ready. Send me an email and I’ll send you a couple if you like!*

  1. [...] SBS Saturday 23rd October The first of RocKwiz’s Australian tour shows went to air this week. I wa…ong>’s Australian tour shows went to air this week. I was really happy to see the show was extended to one hour, but I must admit a little disappointed with the show it’s self. The featured artists were mostly good, but the songs in my opinion came up a little short. We started off with Clare Bowditch, who has a great voice, but the song was for me easily forgettable. I also think she is a stunning looking girl, but the hair and make up here let her down a bit. Clare’s opponent was John Paul Young, who of course performed Love Is In The Air. He’s been trotting this out for half a century, it seems and it is always a crowd pleaser with the arm waving crowd, so who am I to put it down. [...]
