THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 17 FEB 2012

Luv is in the air…

Or rather was. Valentine’s Day is over for another year. No more soppy lovey-dovey cards. No more cuddly stuffed toys with a sickeningly adorable slogan t-shirt. No more rushing to Tescos to grab the last bunch of roses. No more boxes of delicious chocolates…actually, scrap that, let’s keep the chocolates going! So to replace the corny and cheesy scent of commercialised romance, let’s get stuck into some violent, gritty, gory and nudity-filled cult movies, just the way we like it. Hell yeah!

THE BEST THINGS OUT NOW!

  • Dawn Of The Dragon Slayer (Anchor Bay, DVD  & Blu-Ray) Swords! Combat! Dragons! What more could you possibly want from a film? Anchor Bay’s excellent Dawn Of The Dragon Slayer was released earlier this week and has been getting raving reviews. What’s your favourite Dragon film? Head over to the film’s official forum to share yours. Order yours from Amazon and share your thoughts. If you’re a fan of Merlin, Reign Of Fire or Dragonslayer then this is a must have. (Oh and the two lead characters are pretty easy on the eyes too).

  • Penitentiary (Arrowdrome; DVD) -  “There’s only one way out and 100 fools stand in his way!” If I had a single ounce of ‘cool’ I would deliver this blaxploitation-stylee, but since I’m nothing more than a  goddamn’ jive turkey fool, I think I’ll leave that. Arrowdrome’s first Blaxploitation was released this week and it’s a classic! The DVD comes complete with the first Penitentiary and it’s fun sequel. This, ladies and gentlemen, it’s Blaxploitation cinema at it’s greatest.
  • Red Scorpion (Arrow Video, Blu-Ray) – Also out from Arrow this week is the explosive Lundgren 80′s actioner bursting its way on to Blu-Ray. Stuffed with action, fun 80′s cliches and flame-throwers (yes, freakin’ flame-throwers!), it’s all here for a proper lads night in. “You’re out of your mind!” “Nope, just out of bullets.” Classic. Order yours here and visit the film’s Official Forum to share your thoughts.

COMING SOON!

  • Blood Car (Left Films, Theatrical Release). As I type this newsletter, I’m currently sat in bed, cuddly stuffed toy with sickeningly adorable t-shirt by my side, and The Car blaring it’s demonic horn full blast on my TV. As a huge fan of carsploitation, a film with the title Blood Car is a must-see. It’s out soon and quite frankly, I’m bursting at the bladder to see it. I can’t wait! Blood Car is out in cinemas on the 24th of Feb.
  • Dracula: Prince Of Darkness (Studio Canal; DVD/Blu-Ray Double Play) Hammer Horror; now we’re talking. As a massive Hammer hound, I was blown away by the quality of Studio Canal’s release of Quatermass & The Pit on Blu-Ray. Now, along comes this release and it’s got me all excited over Hammer again. We’ve set up a special forum for the Hammer Studios on Cult Labs, so be sure to pop in and get talking all about your favourite Hammer films. Dracula: Prince Of Darkness is out on the 9th of March and can be pre-ordered here.

  • A Horrible Way To Die (Anchor Bay, DVD & Blu-Ray) From a Hammer classic to this modern day masterpiece, Anchor Bay’s A Horrible Way To Die is a superb little horror film that, whilst certainly gory, uses other means to terrify the viewers senseless. A gripping story that’s expertly and beautifully told. Managed to see it at Fright Fest or via other means? Share your thoughts of the film over at the forum!
  • Dellamorte Dellamore (aka. Cemetery Man) - (Shameless Screen Entertainment, DVD).  “I’ll give my life to be dead.” With the release of Dellamorte Dellamore soon approaching, the forum has been busy with lots of zombie talk. From the strangest zombie films, to a fantastic (if I do say so myself) blog on romance in this flesh-eating genre. This crazy and unique entry into the hoard of zombie films is a real treat and a must have for any undead fan. Visit the forum here for more details or pre-order your copy from Amazon.
  • Urban Explorers (Anchor Bay;DVD & Blu-Ray) – Counting down to the release of Urban Explorer, the film has it’s very own hub site full of fascinating articles including Real Urban Explorers and A Valentine’s Atrocity. Great reading for an equally great film. Don’t forget to visit the forum too, there’s plenty of topics to get stuck into.
  • 21 Jump Street (Anchor Bay, DVD) Get nostalgic with this fantastic box set of the 80′s classic TV show, 21 Jump Street. Staring a certain Mr. Johnny Depp in one of his earliest roles, 21 Jump Street was one of the most popular shows of the 1980s and is a lot of fun. So, bring out those leg warmers, jelly shoes and parachute pants from the back of your wardrobe, stick on some Adam Ant, grow back your mullet and head over to the brand new forum to get stuck into some chit-chat.  Both the first season and the complete box set are out on the 9th March and can be pre-ordered online.
  • Corman’s World (Anchor Bay) – Roger Corman’s fanhub has been going utterly crazy with interesting articles this week, in time for this fascinating documentary’s release. There’s information about his highly-praised Poe Pictures, details on Attack Of The Crab Monsters and Death Race 2000 as well as a whole slurry of other equally interesting reads.  Check them out if you haven’t done so already, or the official mini- forum for this release.

PRISONER: CELL BLOCK H

This week in the official Prisoner: Cell Block H forum, we’re counting down the days until the 11th Volume is finally released on DVD.  Horray! Out on the 20th of this month comes a set which includes some of the most iconic moments of the show; the great fire of Wentworth Detention Center. Things are heating up!  Check out the volume’s own sub-forum for all the details, some screenshots and some great little clips too. As if that wasn’t enough, Volume 12 is also just around the corner!  Double horray! Sadly, this set has also been pushed back a couple of days (now due for release on the 12th of March rather than the 5th). The 12th Volume contains episodes 353 to 384 and includes a flee for freedom from the Queen Bea herself. Will she be able to successfully escape the prison and the clutches of the terrifying Freak once and for all. Well you’ll just have to wait and see.  Volume 11 is out on the 20th and can be pre-ordered here, followed by Volume 12 on the 12th (here).

WIN! WIN! WIN! BECAUSE WE’RE GENEROUS LIKE THAT!

This week we’ve had three fantastic competitions, a Valentine’s Day comp, a chance to win Anchor Bay’s brilliant Dawn Of The Dragon Slayer and the weekly competition. If you missed those, then you’re a little late to the party as all but the weekly competition have finished. Thankfully this week’s competition prize is none other than Arrowdrome’s blaxploitation classic double bill Penitentiary and it’s sequel! Just head over to the Competition’s Thread and put on your dirty-minded hat as this comp is all about movie title innuendos! Oo-er.

But, wait, theres more! We’ve teamed up with the terrific cult-film-obsessed site Attack From Planet B to give away 3 extra copies of Dawn Of The Dragon Slayer. So, if you missed the competition on the forum, head here for another chance. Good luck!

Well, that’s it for this week but remember there are so many ways you can get involved with all the cult film fun at Cult Labs:
