THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 20 APR 2012

IT’S FRIDAY!

Just a few more hours until your hectic work week comes to an end and your free to enjoy your weekend! Horray! What have you got planned? Venturing off into the unexplored territories of the Amazon rainforest? Discovering a previously unknown cave deep underground and fighting off the colonies of cannibalistic cave-dwellers single-handedly? Perhaps your planning to go ski-diving in the nude? Or just sitting at home watching, eating take-away and watching obscure, dodgy films? I somehow have a sneaking suspicion it may be the latter.

Along with Friday, comes a whole load of traditions. Heading out on the town, eating fish, feeling freaky and of course, the weekly newsletter, full of delicious cult goodness. So before you attempt to save the world from man eating cave creatures, here’s a run down of some of the best cult news to enjoy with your takeaways…

ALL THE BEST CULT RELEASES

National Lampoon’s Dirty Movie

Do you like your comedy clean and friendly? Good for you! But if, like me, you prefer your humor a little more risque, more in-your-face, more offensive and far less tasteful, then you’ve just struck gold. Move over South Park, get out the way Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle, there’s a new kid on the block and it’s badder, ruder and has more balls than either of those. It’s the one, the only National Lampoon’s Dirty Movie. From the makers of Animal House, Class Reunion and Vacation comes the most outrageous film you’re likely to see. It’s out now and can be picked up here, prepare to be offended, along with every other person! Check out the official Tumblr for more info, exclusive clips and jokes too offensive and rude for the Forum!

Dracula: Prince Of Darkness

“Dead for ten years, Dracula, Prince of Darkness, lives again” screaming the tagline to this 1966 Hammer classic. Well now, over 50 years later, Studio Canal has resurrected this masterpiece of vampire cinema from the merky depths of Hell and given it the HD treatment.  Prepare to be chilled to the bone with Christopher Lee’s unbeatable performance once again! A statement was sent to Cult Labs this week regarding the double play release, which read:

“We are pleased to announce that the reworked edition of Dracula Prince of Darkness DVD and Blu-ray double play will be ready on Monday 30th April.
If you have already contacted VDC then your copy will be dealt with as a priority. If not please email the following address with proof of purchase and they will be able to send out a replacement disc to you.

Email - enquiries@vdcgroup.com

We apologise for the time it has taken to inform you of this date but we needed to be sure that all of the work has been done to the highest possible standard. We thank you for your continued patience in this matter and we hope you enjoy your new discs upon delivery.”

The Wicker Tree

With only two weeks until Robin Hardy’s Evil Dead II-esque ‘sequel’ to The Wicker Man is released on to DVD and Blu-Ray by Anchor Bay, the forum has been busy chatting away about all things Wicker and pagan. If you haven’t done so already, visit the very popular new thread all about ritualistic horrors. Here you can discuss to your hearts content all about your favourite (and least favourite) horror films based upon paganism, cults, rituals and human sacrificing. If anything, you’ll be very impressed with member Make Them Die Slowly‘s encyclopedic knowledge of all such things. Be sure to visit the latest blog too, with a countdown of the top 5 Ritualistic British horrors from The Wicker Man to Blood On Satan’s Claw. Fancy a rather exclusive sneak peak at The Wicker Tree? Then have a look see at this thread for several very cool clips from the new movie…

The Divide

Prepare to be blown away! From the director of Frontier(s) comes a truly upsetting, stark and uncomprimising look at surviving the apocalypse…or attempting to. Staring Michael Biehn, the film tells of a group of survivors locked away in an underground shelter hiding from a nuclear holocaust. But things quickly get ugly and soon a whole load of freaky stuff begins to happen. Not for the faint hearted, this film certainly is extreme!  Sam has been working like a mad man to bring you the best possible content in the run-up to the film’s release (which can be pre-ordered here), from articles about the soundtrack, interviews, exclusive clips, news and reviews. All of which can be found on the official site, so check those out!

Shameless Sexploitation

Only three more days! Three more days until three of the sexiest and sleaziest exploitation films are released in one truly stunning box set! Containing Love Goddess Of The Cannibals, Satan’s Baby Doll and The Beast In Space this set is due for release monday and can be pre-ordered online. Head over to this release’s official forum for all the latest news, including a rather neat blog about sexy Beast star, Shilpa Lane and thread to discuss all things sexual and sci-fi. Also, in other Shameless news, a new release has just been announced! It’s another box set and it’s lookinig mighty fine all ready. For more info, you know what to do.

Six Million Dollar Man

If this box set doesn’t leave you speechless, there’s only one word that will escape your lips; wow! This incredibly loved cult TV classic from the 70′s is out now in the ultimate box set.Containing all 5 seasons of 40 discs, and jam-packed with extras including pilots, cross-over shows, reunion movies, featurettes, commentaries and so much more this truly is one of the greatest sets you will ever see. Out now, this is an absolute must have for any fan of the show! Pick up yours from Amazon!

THE GRINDHOUSE PROJECT

Loads of great cult screenings to really get stuck into this week! If you don’t know already, Lamberto Bava’s cult classic Demons is doing a round in UK cinemas. I had the opportunity to watch it in good ol’ Norwich and loved it! Lots of gore, vomit and one heck of a soundtrack! *headbangs* Check this list to see when it’s being shown at a cinema near you.

Also out in cinemas is the very cool new action film from Indonesia. The Raid is one of the greatest, most adrenaline-fueled movies you’ll see! Full of mouth-gaping combat, a great plot and jaw-dropping effects this is one of the most talked about films of the year. Check out the film at either of these screenings if you can make it:

Whilst your at it, don’t forget to head over to the Empire Cinema website for a listing of The Divide. It’s such a powerful film that I urge you to see in the cinema if you can. Head to the link for all the details and more!

Or perhaps Horror is more your cup of tea? Well, Cigarette Burns are hosting one fun night tomorrow with a screening of the cult classic Pieces. It’s ridiculously gory, hillariously bad and so, so quotable. Whatever you do, do not miss this! Ostensibly a slasher flick, Pieces is in fact a huge, cheesy slice of WTF – a parade of baffling non-sequiturs that will confuse and amuse you in equal measure.Despite a mind-boggling degree of technical ineptitude and acting that would make Tommy Wiseau cringe, PIECES is incredible fun and has charm to spare: this rare 35mm screening is not to be missed for any fan of the weird and the wonderful. What you will witness is truly unbelievable. Visit their site for all the details!
