THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 15 JUNE 2012

I AM YOUR FATHER!

So as the weekend draws ever nearer, here’s a quick reminder that Sunday is Father’s Day! Cinema is full of classic dads, from Darth Vader, Professor Henry Jones and Clark Griswold, so what better present than a bottle of beer and a box set of movies. Anyhow, loads of great cult titles in this newsletter, so I’ll stop yapping away and get on with it!

ALL THE BEST CULT RELEASES

There are so many titles out soon that to avoid turning this newsletter into a collosal tombe, here’s a very brief run-down of what to look out for soon…

  • Zombie 108 (Showbox 2nd July) – Like Zombies? You’ll love this film! It’s sleazy, it’s exploitative, it’s trashy and it’s so much fun! The first zombie film from Taiwan is a must see! Keep your eyes out for more info on the Cult Labs forum!
  • Lion Of The Desert (Anchor Bay, 2nd July) – From sheer sleaze, to a dignified epic. Lion Of The Desert is very similar to Lawrence of Arabia and classic films of that magnitude. Starring two legendary actors, Anthony Quinn and Oliver Reed amongst a very impressive line-up, this is amongst the greatest war films you’re likely to see.
  • The Message (Anchor Bay, 2nd July) – Continuing on from Lion Of The Desert comes the equally epic and solidly stunning The Message. Warning: Watch these two films in High Def Blu-Ray, back to back and you may just find yourself in A&E due to an overwhelming sense of awe.
  • Avoid The Shortcut (Anchor Bay, 9th July) – If horror has taught us one thing over the years, it’s to “Stay on the road!” Well, here is a terrifying new horror film that shows you just why you should stick to the path and Avoid The Shortcut!
  • Airborne (Chelsea Films, 23rd July) – Keeping with recent horrors, we have Airborne out later next month. If you’re like me and find flight more frightening than a trip to a blind, sadistic dentist then this film is bound to have your heart beating and your nerves quaking.  Set in an airplane, this is an intense, claustrophobic and chilling must-see horror. Oh, and it also stars Mark Hamill – yes, that Mark Hamill.
  • The Reptile & The Plague Of The Zombies (Studio Canal, 18th June) -  It’s exciting times for Hammer fans! Studio Canal are re-releasing the very best of classic Hammer over the next few months on gloriously stunning Double Play DVD/Blu-Ray sets. Out this month are the unforgettable The Reptile and The Plague Of The Zombies. Come and visit the brand new Hammer forum for all the details!
  • Arrow Video – This week saw two great Arrow releases (seriously, which Arrow releases aren’t?!). Cult fans will be in heaven with the release of the Frankenhooker Arrowdrome DVD and the X-Rental box set containing 6 fun exploitation classics, including Maniac Cop!
  • Shameless Screen Entertainment - There’s been so much talk about future possible Shameless releases this week on the forum. From The Short Night Of The Glass Dolls, All The Colours Of The Dark and Formula For A Murder and many more! Share your thoughts here.
  • God Bless America (Studiocanal, 9th July) – Sunday drivers, people who talk in the cinema, reality TV… the list of annoying things are endless in this modern day. Well, imagine if one day you suddenly snapped, grabbed a shotgun and stole a fancy car and decided to take out all of the world’s annoyances one bullet at a time. God Bless America tells just that story! Whatever you do, DO NOT MISS THIS FILM!
  • The Squad – Out on Monday is the spine-tingling, nerve-shattering new horror film, The Squad. Telling the story of a group of soldiers who come across a bunker where something isn’t quite right. With a focus on the psychological and paranoia with a splattering of gore included, this film comes highly recommended for fans of Deathwatch, R-Point, The Thing and other such films.

WIN! WIN! WIN! BECAUSE WE’RE GENEROUS LIKE THAT!

This week we’re giving away four copies of the incredible Arrow box set, X-Rental. The set includes Maniac Cop, McBain, The Cheerleaders, The Revenge Of The Cheerleaders and Penitentiary 1 & 2. Pretty cool stuff! For your chance to win simply head on over to this Week’s Competition and re-arrange the movie quotes! Think you can do it? Put your movie knowledge to the test and prove it!

Well, that’s it for this week but remember there are so many ways you can get involved with all the cult film fun at Cult Labs:
