In The Night Porter, Dirk Bogarde helps to explore the worst excesses of the Nazis after the fact. The compulsive S&M relationship between his character and that of Charlotte Rampling is one in which both participants are locked in an abusive dance, reliving the sickness and horror of the concentration camps that forged their twisted bond in the first place.

A GATEWAY TO EXPLOITATION

Dirk Bogarde had past form playing decadent Nazis. In the 1968 film The Damned he plays a man who rises through the ranks of a aristocratically owned corporation during the ascent of the Nationalist Socialist Party. It’s a film from the opposite end of the World War Two, in which we see how fascism eventually overwhelms even the powerful people stood to profit from it.

THE NIGHT PORTER RELEASE INFO

Taken together, they offer a fascinating and at times perverse glimpse into the evil mindset of Nazis and also a master class from Bogarde who shines in both of these emotionally devastating movies. The fact that both titles also feature Rampling ties the movies together even more closely. Here are two films from a very different and in some ways more liberal era of movie making. Treat yourself to a very dark double bill…
