THIS WEEK @ CULT LABS: 3 AUG 2012

It’s August Already!

Can you believe it?! This year is just whizzing past at a staggering pace – we’re already in August – that’s only 4 months left until the end of the year (and the world if you like). Start preparing yourself for the trickling of unbelievably early Christmas knick-knacks subtly sneaking into your local shops very shortly!  Thankfully, there’s plenty of titles to look forward to that makes (what feels like) the speeding up of time most welcome. So, just for you, dear reader, here’s the lowdown on all the best must-have cult titles coming out soon…

Out Now!

  • Pentathlon – So the Olympics are well and truly underway. In keeping with this, Anchor Bay have released Dolph Lundgren’s classic Olympic themed sports action movie, Pentathlon on both DVD and Blu-ray. If however, you’re like me and only watched the opening ceremony of the event rather than the sports, you’ll be pleased to hear that this film offers plenty more than just sport, there’s fighting, drugs, action galore and nazis! Horray! As well as that, the film also co-stars the brilliant David Soul (best known for playing Hutch in the original Starsky and Hutch.) as Dolph’s evil, tyranical Nazi boss. It’s great fun this film.
  • Airborne – This week saw the release of the great new British horror film, Airborne. Staring Mr. Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill amongst a cast of familiar faces, the film takes plane on an airplane, where something isn’t quite right. There’s a killer on the loose, a mysterious cargo crate and bodies are beginning to pile up.  It’s a great film that blends tension, comedy and gore perfectly. Treat yourself to this fun film at the weekend and be sure to let us know what you think! For some other similar Airplane themed horror films, check out our list over on Letterboxd. To celebrate this release, we’ve also put together a great little blog about real-life unsolved airborne horrors, from UFOs to ghost planes. Take a read of it here.
  • Zombie 108 – Zombies!!!! Who doesn’t love a good zombie film? Well, here’s one heck of a good zombie film! Straight from the crazy, gore-obsessed land known as Asia, this film is bonkers, gruesome and very sleazy. A must have for any fans of exploitation. Take a look at this hilliarious clip for a sneak peak at what to expect.
  • The NIght Porter – The mother of all Nazi films is out now on stunning DVD and Blu-ray! A unique blend of exploitation Nazi fun and taboo-busting art, this simply  needs to be in every cult film’s film collection. Over the past few weeks there has been a whole flurry of Night Porter activity so be sure to check all of that great content out, including this wonderful blog all about the film and its influence on the Nazisploitation boom that followed it.
  • Hijacked – It’s another Airplane film this week! Horray! But rather than immense horror, what this film offers is awesome action! Staring world-renowed fighter Randy Couture and Vinnie Jones, this is a great fun movie, perfect for a night of entertainment accompanied with popcorn by the bucket load and a good few beers too. Going on the airplane this summer? Well, be sure to take this handy safety notice – just in case you find yourself in the midst of an all-guns-blazing action thriller!
