I'm working my way through the Hammer Draculas, watched Scars of... yesterday. Last time I watched this I found it really tedious but I thoroughly enjoyed it on the re-watch. Some of the castle models were frankly laughable but it had a good cast and as a whole I found it very enjoyable. (Loved the perspective shots of the view from the castle window, very Bava-esque) Dracula AD 1972 is next. I first caught this on one of those BBC double-bills and have loved it ever since. I haven't got Satanic Rites yet: one question - has it ever been released in anamorphic widescreen? I know the R1 Anchor Bay release isn't and as far as I can see none of the other US releases are either. Was there ever a decent UK release? I wanted to start on the Frankensteins next but have stumbled on the first hurdle - it seems the UK Warner DVD of Curse... has been deleted |

Reaper: What decade did these double bills take place?

Absolutely! I saw some of my favourite horror films for the first time on the double bills - Creeping Flesh, Dr Terror's House of Horrors, From Beyond the Grave etc (at least I think they were part of the double bills - you know how the mind plays tricks!) There's a rather wonderful blog called The Cobwebbed Room that has some scrapbook pages detailing the contents of some of them: THE COBWEBBED ROOM: HORROR DOUBLE BILLS/HORROR FILM SEASONS ON TV |

Got to have been the late seventies/early eighties.

I wasn't born until the late Seventies, which probably explains why I can't remember those double bills. But I do remember those BBC screenings of Horror films, that were presented by Dr Terror. Now these were a lot of fun. Dr terror had the same make-up job as the lead character from the film Funnyman, which featured Christopher Lee. A British film from the 90's, which I would like to see again sometime. It wasn't brilliant, but it was a very watchable film I remember. But they should bring back that whole Dr Terror presents thing, as it was a lot of fun...

I especially remember the Hammer Dracula and Frankenstein films.... For some reason,Dracula Has Risen From The Grave lingers in my memory, especially the scene Lee is impaled on the cross....
