Well, in terms of pure enjoyment I thought it was very good. In terms of artistic merit however it was extremely lacking, certainly not as good as the other slashers of this period.

So I've just watched the cut footage (with some nice intros) and the special features - all the cut scenes were fantastic but the highlight was the utterly gratuitous nailgun murder. I'm gonna watch the extended version tonight and I'm very much looking forward to it. Anyway before then, some comments on the DVD itself and before I start, I was surprised to see that both the 'Theatrical' and 'Extended' cuts were used. I'll probably watch the theatrical one for nostalgic purposes and have already watched some to see how it compared to the fuller version... the cuts always were obvious, now they're painfully obvious!

First of all, some were complaining about a grinding sound when put in the player. Mine had a slight noise (while on the menus) but nothing too distracting so if anyone on here was waiting for later pressings in the hope of it losing that slight niggle then my advice is not to fret because as I say, it's nothing major.

The interactive guide to Slasher films for me wasn't essential because I already knew everything being told. For the newcomer though it's a nice little guide and should set you on your way. What was interesting was how it was broken up into segments but it could have done with more examples for each, years they were made, and availability.

And finally the 20 minute featurette which I was excited about but left feeling a bit disappointed. OK, it was better than nothing and was more than Paramount ever gave us, but to devote only around 25% of it to the original MBV was a bit saddening. It was 25% MBV (1981), 25% Slashers in general and 50% MBV (2009). I have no problem with the addition of the likes of PSYCHO and FRIDAY THE 13th but they could have gone more in depth about the original MBV, regardless, the information offered there and in the intros was, as I say, better than nothing. I do think they should have put the remake talk into a seperate featurette though or left it for when that DVD hits stores... I realise it needs publicity and that and as mentioned elsewhere, it is a film I liked and appreciated a lot, but with all of MBV's history I did expect it to be the centre of attention.

I was also disappointed with the lack of commentary track (one I would definitely have listened to) so that was another missed opportunity.

Anyway, niggles aside, a very good DVD release, it's about time this film got the respect it so thoroughly deserves, it's made my year and it's only February! I appreciate the effort Lionsgate have made and urge everyone to ignore the naysayers who haven't done their homework into why it's not 100% complete (the 9 minutes of deleted dialogue and double penetration kill unfortunately rotted away in the vaults after years of neglect) and support this release.

I am one very happy man indeed!

Good review!

My disc had a bit of grinding as the menu loaded, but it disappeared for the film itself.

I wonder if it will receive a UK release. It would definitely be a big seller.

Incidentally my DVD had a burst of grindiness when the menus loaded too. I think a rampant coal miner was lurking in the player.

Yep,the fact that the cut footage isn't up to scratch didn't bother me in the slightest. The fact that it has been recovered made my day It also highlights WHAT was actually cut in the first place.
