Deranged has the footage spliced in and there's no jump in quality (the previous low quality was because the footage has always previously been spliced in from a VHS master).

It kind of annoys me though since this scene was CUT OUT by the filmmaker's for a reason, not because of censorship. So this is NOT "Uncut" and it's not the director's cut.

Imagine if all DVD and Blu labels spliced deleted scenes into films and called them "uncut"?

Regardless, it's here.

Glad to hear there's no reduction in PQ when the restored footage is introduced

Well, what was the reason?

Buy the blu-ray for the full story, but the reasoning is split between a) the effects were not considered as convincing as the rest of the film and b) Bob Clark felt it was too scatological seeing as it's the entire point of the scene.

For a brief history of this movie's home video releases, see the excellent Blu-ray review at MONDO DIGITAL:

I have the blu-ray, but I don't remember seeing/hearing anything about it.

Me neither, as far as I know the footage was cut by the MPAA, I know Bob Clark asked for his name taken off it because he didn't want it ruining his career (as mentioned during the commentary and in the booklet), but this is the first I've heard about this

I see your point of view on this one Andrew and I would readily agree on any other film but I would argue that the brain scooping has become such an integral part of the Deranged mythos, I think the uncut tag is entirely justifiable here.

I'm glad the brain scooping is back in as I always thought it was a very good sequence, thematically and as a special effect. I was initially disappointed with the lo-fi source used on the German DVD but finally glad to see it. If the film makers did insist on the scene's extraction I can only offer that film makers aren't always the best judge of their work...
