I think that's a terrible cover for Cliffhanger .

Have you seen them before, Paul?

Kill Baby Kill! and The Black Torment are masterpieces of Gothic horror.

I enjoyed Bavas Blood and black lace as well. not as good as Dario argento who i feel makes better films, but still very entertaining. :)

This is how i would look at it. I highly rate both directors.

Bava made very good films his whole career. There's not one i don't like that i've seen. Whereas Argento ran out of steam following Opera (1987) and has made quite a few poor ones since.

However it can also be argued that Argento has been directing for a lot longer than Bava so it's entirely possible that his creativity has worn thin. There's also the small fact that there isn't much of an Italian film industry anymore especially for genre cinema so it's difficult to get finance for major productions. Bava on the other hand was arguably at the centre of Italian genre cinema throughout it's peak years and didn't have to face the struggles facing Dario in the 2000's.

Paul Zombie 5th July 2018 12:37 PM

i agree with you about Argento running out of steam since Opera, and apart from one or two good ideas in Sleepless and The stendahl syndrome his films were rubbish later on.
but i still think that in his hey day he surpass Bava with better camera work and music. bava may have started the giallos but argento perfected it.
and it was argento i knew long before bava so i guess it't a personal preference. i also still need to see more of bavas films as i only discovered his work a short while ago. having said that, one film i didn't enjoy was Girl who knew to much.

The Last Picture Show is a recently discovered classic for me.

Nice purchase. :woot:

WowBobWow 6th July 2018 06:59 AM

The trilogy of books by Larry McMurtry, including The Last Picture Show, are well worth reading if you enjoyed the film.

The film sits comfortably in my top ten of all time.

I've not see The Last Picture Show so it's a blind buy for me, I'm familiar with ...Idaho though :) I'm looking forward to watching both this weekend.

The only McMurtry book i've read is Lonesome Dove. I found it quite hard going, but i was only in my teens when i read it.

I went from Joe Millard's Dollars novels to Lonesome Dove. There's quite a difference.

Popped into Poundland. Cex and the local charity shops this morning whilst out shopping. For a change Poundland had a whole load of new stuff so picked up a bundle. The charity shops had a few gems including the newly released Dark River and the Slim Man movies and i traded in a couple of dvds that were double dips at Cex to get some blurays of movies i haven't seen.

Having enjoyed a 4:3 version of New Nightmare last year i decided at £2.50 i'd like the proper widescreen version. Pity it came with the other six films though.

Argh! Episode 50. A decent premise squandered. IMO. Ahem.
