It's one of my favourite zombie films and trumps most of Romero's efforts in my opinion.

I listed it as my joint fave horror film of 1980 (along with The Shining)... however, if you note my ratings above you'll notice that The Fog does in fact score slightly higher... I must have had a change of heart since.
Although i like it to me it doesn't really make much sense. I recall the last time i watched it i had so many unanswered questions...not that i can think of any at the moment of course.

Speaking of not much sense. I went back to Manhattan Baby the other evening...Jesus!

Having to make sense isn't necessarily a stipulation for me... in fact, a great deal of my favourite films don't really make a great deal of sense in many respects!

Manhattan Baby is quite possibly your number one then.

There's not making a great deal of sense and then there is senseless!

I do kind of enjoy Manhattan Baby on some sort of (weird) level though... for reference, I currently have it scored at 38.

Same here. Possession is far from a straightforward film with a simple explanation, and the same goes for other favourites like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Eraserhead and Inland Empire (even though there is an explanation for what is happening and how to interpreted the on-screen events in those Lynch films), Naked Lunch, The Machinist and Donnie Darko.

Films don't have to be explained, i wasn't suggesting that at all. Ambiguity is often a plus point with genre films - take Honeymoon as a recent example. Of the ones you mentioned i love Naked Lunch, Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway. Still not watched Possession on dvd even though i've owned it for over a year. I've not seen it since i owned the sell thru vhs.

The aforementioned Manhattan Baby is an incoherent mess with a couple of decent ish gore scenes which makes B_E's score of 38 reasonable.

I think one of my q's regarding City was why only four zombies were resurrected? Not exactly flooding out of the gates of hell were they?

I'm a big fan of CotLD too - it rates just after Zombie Flesh-Eaters as my favourite Fulci flick. I wouldn't say I like it more than Romero's Day of the Dead, but I certainly like it more than the slightly overrated Dawn of the Dead. I'm glad you seem to rate my list of faves. I do have plenty more but I don't really have the time to list them all.

I know you weren't suggesting that films had to be explained, because I also like ambiguity – I was discussing The Descent with someone on Twitter yesterday and said how I much prefer the UK ending to the American one – and thought Manhattan Baby was bonkers, but fun in parts and tedious in others.

City of the Living Dead is, like The Beyond, a strange one because the title isn't really reflected in the content, at least in terms of the 'end of days'! My understanding is that there are only zombies in The Beyond because some preview audiences expected them to be there and were confused when there were no living dead.
