Is The Omega Man technically a remake? Surely it's just one of a number of adaptations of Richard Mathesons novel?

Interesting. I'll do something similar with my list, making it clear which, if any, I think are improvements. It is tough because something like The Thing (and just about every adaptation of Dracula, Frankenstein and other works of classic literature) isn't necessarily a remake if it is more a different adaptation of the source material than something like The Hills Have Eyes, which was an original screenplay in the first instance.

The more I think about it, the tougher this category is.

I thought straw dogs was f*****g terrible. It entirely missed the point of the Peckinpah version and horribly miscast most of the cast.

I thought there were some interesting ideas in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, and Jackie Earle Haley is a terrific actor but, like the Platinum Dunes movies, it was distinctly lacking in subtlety and subtext.

Most of them would have benefited from different names, even though the Daniel Craig/Nicole Kidman vehicle Invasion flopped critically and commercially with 'of the Body Snatchers' excised from the title.

Ha'ha, fair enough. As a thriller i found it enjoyable but as i said it should have had a different name as it really wasn't the Peckinpah film.

I noticed you featured Prom Night as one of your worst. There were a lot that came out around that time that were PG13 watered down remake shite but one if i recall was okay, it's just i can't remember which one it was now. Sorority Row perhaps? I still own it so there's a chance that was the one.

One of the remakes I was reasonably impressed with was When a Stranger Calls, which I went into with rock bottom expectations, but it seemed to benefit from extending the first act (with the stranger in the house and no relocation) to make a fairly intense home invasion horror movie. I think it was Camille Belle's first film – I don't know what she's done since – and she was very good as a 'final girl'.

I don't know if it would make my list though.
