I can't really disagree with you. Lewton's ambiguity in a lot of these films leaves it all open to whatever interpretation the viewer chooses.

I really have to watch the documentaries in the boxset.
Going off road here what are your thoughts on Lewtons The Body Snatcher Dem?

One of my all time favourite films. It's near perfect. That and I Walked with a Zombie both make my all time top 10.

The Body Snatcher begins quite mildly with the charming little girl and her meeting with Gray then trainee doctor Fettes, but it all escalates from there on and ends up quite nasty and full blown horror with the ghostly carriage drive. Gray's murder of the blind singer and even Greyfriars Bobby is quite sadistic. Above all it's a terrific character study which showcases the talents of Boris Karloff and Henry Daniell.

Karloff is amazing in it and his scenes with Lugosi really showcase how superior an actor he was. I Walked With A Zombie i just don't get on with, I've tried several times and i just find it dull.

Some of Lugosi's best work too in my opinion. The brief role means he can't ham it up all the time. Although he is memorable, it's at least for the right reasons.

Have a listen to the commentary track on I Walked with a Zombie. It should bring out a lot of the film's secrets and hopefully shed new light on what is to me an absolute classic...then watch the film again.

I have, the commentary was recommended by yourself and Nos if i recall. While it was informative it didn't really help to be honest.
