LOST HEARTS ( 1973 )

A young orphan goes to live with his much older, eccentric cousin and discovers that other children who have stayed there have disappeared, never to be seen again. However, he soon starts to be haunted by a boy and girl who previously stayed there.
I remember watching this as a kid and it scared the crap out of me! All these years later, I still think the hurdy gurdy playing kids are extremely creepy and the whole story is definitely one of the best of the BBC’s Ghost Stories For Christmas.
If you already have this on dvd, I strongly recommend you get the new Blu Ray set from the BFI - the upgrade in quality is pretty amazing. It’s never looked as good as this.

Colombiana. 2011.

When a young girl witnesses her parents being killed by a drug cartel, she grows up to be a assassin and goes after those responsible.

Something that certainly holds your attention with Zoe Saldana as the young female looking for revenge and does it with some good style with the F.B.I on her trail. Written by duo Robert Mark Keman and Luc Besson you know to expect a good film with a female that can take a punch and knows how to dish it out. One certainly worth watching again.

The Foreigner. 2017.

After his daughter is killed in a bombing, Quan tries to find out who is responsible from police and Ireland's deputy Prime Minister.

Jackie Chan stars as the broken chinaman but don't expect him to be busting a lot of moves like his previous films with comedy, this is part action with his back story as a ex special forces soldier who can make some good bombs and forest traps. Pierce Brosnan plays the deputy prime minister and is a ex IRA member who wants answers and identity of the bombers. After the first 5 minutes into the film we are thrown into the main plot and from there on in everything goes great, nothing goes slow or fast with the pace with some political satire, betrayal and good acting.

Hannibal (2001)

A sequel to the classic serial killer film The Silence of the Lambs (1991) in which Anthony Hopkins reprises his role as Hannibal Lecter.

Based on the book by Thomas Harris, Hannibal was always going to struggle to compete with a film that was a worldwide phenomenon and really made Anthony Hopkins and Lecter household names. I think director Ridley Scott knew this, decided he couldn't compete so basically upped everything from gore and scale to all round general excess.

There are some great set pieces here, in particular the death of Giancarlo Giannini's policeman at Florence's famed Palazzo Vecchio and the demise of Ray Liotta's less than charming Justice Dept official. However unlike the original Silence of the Lambs there's very little in the way of suspense which is a shame as that film was an exercise in sustained terror throughout.

Lecter himself became an anti-hero in Silence and is one even more so here. Hopkins is excellent and clearly relishing Lecter being free to do as he wishes. From saving Clarice Starling (A very good Julianne Moore) from death to righting old wrongs in the form of the disfigured Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) a child molester out for revenge on Lecter who disfigured him by feeding his face to his dogs as seen in flashback.

Daft though it may be at times, i always enjoy watching Hannibal. It always entertains and is never boring, however it does differ quite dramatically from the novel but that's a discussion for elsewhere.

RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER (1975)

My favorite of the series. I had not seen this in a long time and sat through the whole movie with a smile on my face. So many funny scenes one after the other. The scene in the steam room with the slipery floor is the highlight for me, and makes me laugh out loud and it takes a lot to do that when I watch a movie.

Toy Story. 1995.

A toy cowboy named Woody is his owner's Andy favourite toy, but when Andy gets a spaceman toy jealous erupts from Woody.

One of the few computer animated films I actually enjoyed watching with my nephew and neice when they were younger and today i still find this funny everytime I watch it. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen do a great job providing the voices of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

Toy Story 2. 1999.

When Woody is kidnapped by a greedy toy store owner, the other toys try to rescue him.

The actors from the first return with a new characters Al voiced by Wayne Knight as the big chicken guy who owns the Al's Toy Barn and plan on selling Woody and his round up gang to a museum in Tokyo with The Prospector voiced by Kelsey Grammar and Jessie voiced by Joan Cusack. This didn't have much laugh out moments but can give out a small snigger or two. This is a bit better than the previous film and has its own comical outtakes that make up for the lack of laughs in the film.

Diamonds are Forever (1971)

One of the weakest Bond films i acknowledge, yet although i tend to zone out a bit during the formulaic oil rig finale, it's still a film i for the most part enjoy.

Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint are unusual and memorable villains / henchmen and although not the most formidable opponents in a fist fight with Bond are excellent merciless killers even if a touch camp.

The Las Vegas setting for the middle third of the film i always enjoy looking at (Especially in HD). Having myself been to Vegas three times it's interesting to see it developing into what it is now. The car chase around the early Fremont Street casinos such as the Golden Nugget is well done even if they obviously couldn't close the roads - look on the sidewalks as crowds gather to watch the action.

Meanwhile following a silly opening pre-credits sequence, although not half as silly as For Your Eyes Only ten years later, the film settles down into an intriguing story as Bond attempts to infiltrate a diamond smuggling ring. There's no super villain threatening to destroy the world (That comes in the third act) it's simply an engrossing attempt to stop a smuggling operation.

Sean Connery's return to the series following the perceived miss fire of George Lazenby in previous film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) sadly doesn't really work. Although he has the screen presence that Lazenby possibly lacked, Connery, for me at least, pretty much goes through the motions here, and although still hugely watchable isn't the same dynamic Connery Bond as his earlier outings.

Diamonds are Forever is a film i've returned to many times across the decades, be it on tv, video, dvd and now Blu-ray so despite it's flaws it clearly has that timeless longevity and rewatch value that so many of todays big budget studio films appear to lack.

Thank you.

All the underwater footage spoils Thunderball for me, especially the lengthy final battle where one army of divers with spear guns looks like the next army of spear gun wielding divers.

To say it's the story all the fighting with co-writer Kevin McClory was about i wouldn't have bothered. Resulting film Never Say Never Again is even worse.

A doctor who created a N' Bomb is kidnapped by Mr Giant, Agent Double O, is sent in to rescue the doctor and kill the bad guys.

Yes this a Filipino spoof of James Bond but our hero is 3 foot tall, martial arts expert and given a range of weapons to use. This film could have been the inspiration for the Austin Powers film as the little hero seems to be very lucky with the ladies like Mr Bond but this also has way too much comedy and very low budget with the dubbing all over the place. it's good for the laughs and action.

Alucarda. 1977.

A young woman sent to live in a convent is befriended by another young girl, while out walking they meet a gypsy who places a curse on one of them.

A bit of a similar tone to Ken Russell's The Devils, outbreak of demonic possession in a convent and a unorthodox doctor/exorcist trying to outcast the devil from a young woman but this is a bit more darker and Gothic style scenery. Based on the story Carmilla director Juan Lopez Moctezuma doesn't hold back on the slight nod towards a bit of lesbianism between the two main leads but goes a bit further with the nudity and some good strong gore. This is one I have avoided for ages for a second glance but glad I took the plunge and viewed it again.

M3GAN. 2023.

Welcome to the mix of Child's Play (2019 version), Dolly Dearest rolled in to one sweet innocent looking dolly. This wasn't too bad on the story line, decent acting from Alison Williams as the creator and Violet McGraw as the orphaned niece, there is some minor laughs but whoever decided to tone this film down and turn it from a horror to a Science-Fiction thriller really needs to get a grip on what the audience anticipated.

Dashcam. 2021.

A American blogger travels to England to meet up with friends, she takes her friend's car that leads to a nightmare night of survival.

Rob Savage who gave us Host that was given a good write up maybe overly hyped which can me misleading but that film was good, this was classed as "creepy as fcuk" so I went with it.

Part Dashcam part Go-Pro cam, when Cloverfield came out a lot of people felt dizzy with the shaky camera, prepare for that to happen with this film and yeah it can be worse. The main character who loves to blog is the reason people should not have camera in front of them. As the film went on I began to wish she was killed off early. What was wrong with the other character is never really explained as her mother never gets the chance to explain it, and is something of a partial small fragment seen parasite. For a film that is 80 minutes long it could have been shorter, not a film I'd view again.

Last Man Standing. 1996.

A drifter becomes a gun for hire in a ghost town that's controlled by two gang families that try to take control of everything and everyone.

A tough gritty film by Walter Hill set in the town of Jericho during the 1930s prohibition with Bruce Willis as the drifter John Smith who makes a enemy quickly and is signed up by Italian Strozzi played by Ned Eizenberg who is the enemy of Doyle played by David Patrick Kelly with his right hand man Hickey played by Christopher Wakken. The acting is great in this from everyone even with Bruce Dern as the local law and William Sanderson as the local bartender.

This is like the usual gangster film with everyone wanting to control something, film noir with Willis describing how things are and how he feels about it and the way he plays the two families against each other is well written and directed and certainly isn't shy of taken a beaten. Hadn't seen this since it first came out and certainly more enjoyable now than before.

CHRISTMAS BLOODY CHRISTMAS – Throw ‘Clerks’ and ‘The Terminator’ in with a killer Santa and you have CBC, the latest from Joe Begos. Begos has, over his last three or four movies, nailed a specific look but it’s basically the palette of the classic eighties apologist, with everything drenched in lilac and puce neon and set to a Carpenterian synth soundtrack. It’s what people seemed to go in for ten years ago, but the eighties obsession never fades. I’m not rolling my eyes or anything because I quite dig it, and for me CBC his strongest movie yet. I think it takes something to pull off a completely absurdist concept (basically, android killer Santa) without resorting to cheap laughs – despite touches of black comedy, the mood surrounding the mayhem is somehow dead straight, even bleak, and the copious prosthetic gore is mean-spirited as often as it’s simply ‘fun’. Many have dissed the quickfire, seemingly improv-heavy dialogue, but I thought it was great. Just excellent, and I can honestly see it being a personal future seasonal fave up there with ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’.

A WOUNDED FAWN – From Travis Stevens. I liked ‘Girl On The Third Floor’ and found ‘Jakob’s Wife’ enjoyable, if a little less effective. AWF seems to take a different direction, and impresses us with an air of arty abstraction from the opening scene. In fact, the way the film captures the look of an early eighties Euro arthouse horror flick in terms of vibes alone is nothing short of eerie – the grain, the lighting, the layout of the shots all match up with a style of filmmaking that is utterly extinct. The plot is a bit more tangible. It’s about a serial killer, initially posing as an auctioneer, who entices his new date / victim away to the woods, where a secluded cabin awaits. There follows a predictable game of cat and mouse, but then the film explodes into surrealist rampage full of references to Max Ernst and Greek mythology. This avalanche of weirdness can’t quite conceal the fact that there is very little that is truly enigmatic about this film, but it’s satisfying to see Shudder-era product taking these kind of aesthetic risks. I really enjoyed AWF. Both Sarah Lind and Josh Rubin are excellent in it, and the mad descent into freeform imagery in the latter half is handled well. It doesn’t quite have the substance to back up its claims to strangeness, but I hope Stevens pushes his ambition and takes us even further out next time. If you have a Shudder subscription, I recommend you watch this.

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

A film i've always enjoyed, a film that attempts to do something else with the series and the first to take the character of Jason Vorhees away from Camp Crystal Lake.

However the title lies a little bit as the majority of the action takes place on a ship. A mere six minutes during the final ten minutes takes place in anywhere recognizable as New York.

Where this film is a mess is the script. It's sloppy and not thought out at all. You can't actually think about any scenario because the whole thing simply falls apart.

For example. Jason, the films anti-hero zombie killer. His big no-no throughout the series is water. He's supposedly scared of water as that's how he died as a child in the first place not to mention ending up at the bottom of Crystal Lake at the end of other movies. Jason Takes Manhattan just ignores this and has him turn into some sort of Michael Phelps motherf*cker who swims the oceans faster than five people can row a boat.

Meanwhile the ship the action takes place on. It's a proper ship - the SS Lazarus - hired by a high school to kill off their students, i mean hired by their school to take graduating students and their teachers (One of whom is a complete tool) to celebrate in New York. Mysteriously it seem the SS Lazarus is a ghost ship with no crew other than the captain, co-pilot and a grizzled cleaner who warns of impending doom every time he wanders into shot. Jason leaves unhidden corpses all over the ship including down below but not one body is discovered by anyone.

It's full of stupid inconsistencies but i still enjoy it for what it is - an entertaining slasher with a high body count that throws Jason Vorhees into Times Square for six minutes.

Oh, but you forgot about the handsome handyman guy

I also watched this last night. Nowhere near as bad as people say it is. I actually quite enjoy this one (way more than part 3 (and maybe 5), waaaaaay more). I mean, yes it's too long and why is Jason constantly wet? But, there quite a few cute boys in the cast and that one girl gets beaten to death with a pink Flying V guitar so yeah that's cool!

Because he's constantly swimming!

That was another thing. When the girl is pushed over board and the dude jumps in to save her the ship just stops moving. Just like that. The girl should have been left behind before the guy even thought to jump in to save her. It's not like anyone even told the captain to stop the ship, something that couldn't happen that quick anyway.

This was bad, but not in a way "so bad that makes it good" it's just plain bad.

I didn't understand if they were trying to do a horror, comedy or action movie.

The final girl is annoying, the kills are not great, the only good thing about this movie is only the gore and a couple of Easter eggs.

Probably the worst of the series for me.

Haha! Well, no, i mean once you buy into the whole idea of the unkillable Jason all logic in that regard goes out the window.

I do think they should be able to manage to get basics right. Such as the fact it's impossible to stop a moving ship, not a boat, just like that.

They can do whatever the hell they like with Jason, they could even have him fight Freddy Krueger in a dream world or some nonsense like that and i'd still believe but treat the audience with some respect for other things.

I watched the 88 release of Hide and Go Shriek the other day.

A bit slow paced and I felt they were really trying to shoehorn in the very very tame sex scenes. I think they tried to attempt a red herring but it was pretty sloppy. In spite of its misgivings I did enjoy it overall, but was reading reviews on Letterboxd and a few people were saying they felt it was transphobic…? I’m not sure I’d agree, but then I’m not really in a position to say. Any opinions on this?
