Friday the 13th (2009)

A film which attempts to remake the first few Friday the 13th films in one single shot and fails dramatically.

My main bug bear is with Jason himself. He has a lair in which he keeps a woman prisoner, a lair where he sharpens his blades...what the hell is that all about?

Jason Vorhees is a supernatural entity, here they make him simply a madman in a hockey mask who grows weed.

The Devil Rides Out 1968.

Two friends try to save a third from joining a satanic cult.

Based on the novel by Dennis Wheatley who discussed a lot of the story with occultist Alester Crowley in order to get the premise right, Christopher Lee seems be enjoying the role of Nicholas ((Duc De Richleau) a expert on the occult. As for Charles Gray as Mocata, he has the menacing voice and eyes for the Cult leader.

From the beginning to the end this has always been enjoyable to watch, with the gothic atmosphere in the room with the circle of protection, the effects may be outdated and laughable but you can never be bored of the acting and the book is worth reading.

Great review needed a laugh this afternoon is dragging waiting to finish work. Pretty lame remake as the kids say these days

Hearts in Atlantis (2001)

Based on the story Low Men in Yellow Coats by Stephen King, this is as much a tale of that final summer of being a child as it is a mystery thriller about a drifter (Anthony Hopkins) being hunted down by mystery (CIA?) officials. It's the story of a young boy's journey of discovery about himself and of his deceased father and his friendship with Hopkins is just a means of bringing it all out. In fact the story of the men in hats hunting Hopkins is almost secondary to the whole relationship aspect.

Set in 1960 (if i remember rightly) Hearts in Atlantis has the same vibe as Stand By Me (1986) and the first part of It (1990). King writes so well for child characters and this is no exception. Anton Yelchin (Who is sadly no longer with us) is excellent as eleven year old Bobby and he performs beautifully with Hopkins. And yet having said this, perhaps the films most memorable scene features David Morse as the now grown up Bobby revisiting his rundown former home and meeting the daughter of his childhood sweetheart.

The film stays on the right side of schmaltzy due to an at times sharp adult edge and deals with many topics in a thoughtful way during the course of it's 100 min plus running time.

In part a fantastic love letter to the culture of the 60s and the film business in general. Both DiCaprio and Pitt are some of the best writing characters by Tarantino and both give amazing performances, tonnes of Easter eggs and cameos. The last act with the attack is hilariously funny. If people weren't certain before , this film proves Tarantino's foot fetish! at nearly 3 hours it felt a lot shorter .9.2/10
