Maybe a spolier so just warning ya....

Stupid moment is when Jeff walks into the chainsaw! He knows zombie has a chainsaw so why walk into it!

Today I watched:
I Vampiri
It's... ok, the correct length for me not to get bored. Enjoyed it as an extra but not something i'd pay for (or will ever watch again most likely).

Obsession
First time viewing, really enjoyed this one. Didn't look much like the trailer though.

fuzzymctiger 24th February 2013 12:18 AM

Black Sunday

I watched the AIP version, but only discovered it was censored half way through though. I liked the score and dubbing of this version, felt like a nice old gothic horror movie, almost like a Hammer one. Attention drifted a lot through the first half, but I enjoyed the 2nd half a lot.

Fantastic set, I watched trailer reel, and am very much looking forward to his other works, especially Black Sabbath and Baron Blood, hopefully Arrow can also get Shock, Hatchet For The Honeymoon and some of his other titles.

gag 24th February 2013 02:04 PM

Ive tried several times to watch wolf creek but each time i couldnt get into it.
So decided im going to watch it no mattter what.
Must admit its very well made atmospheric tension etc everything about the film is there but there just something about the film and cant quite put my finger on but i realy could not get into it..

Zann 24th February 2013 02:14 PM

Gave Phantasm another spin yesterday. Such great atmosphere with one of the best horror movie scores of all time...it can be marred though by the unintentionally amusing bald and pony-tailed ice-cream man :pound:

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Kevin Smith Project, a list of films by JustinMc; Letterboxd

Delaney: What? Han Solo ain't never had no sex with Princess Leia in the Star War!

I was expecting to hate this, it has a lot of negative reviews, people saying Kevin Smith has lost it, I think they're all wrong, everything that makes a Kevin Smith movie is in here, from casting choices, to retro soundtrack and lengthy dialogues.

The premise is simple enough, 2 best friends from school who have lived together since leaving college are having a hard time paying the bills, and are inspired into making a porno by a hilarious meeting with Miri's old high school crush and his gay porn acting boyfriend!

I'm surprised its taken me 5 years to watch this film, but I guess when so many people are telling you it's shit you just can't be bothered. I'm glad they were wrong though, great movie.

Just back from my weekend in Glasgow with the Fright Fest crowd. I will try and write up the event on my diary thread in the coming days but heres a quick reaction:

Hellfjord - quirky Norwegian television series very much in the League of Gentleman mould. Recommended.
American Scream- charming documentary about Halloween Haunters.
Byzantium - Neil Jordan returns to the vampire genre with this intersting if ultimately flawed relationship movie.
Lords of Salem - an interesting mess. Rob Zombies talent falls well short of his ambition.
Detention of the Dead - oh man this was bad.
Black Sabbath - screening of the upcoming Bava blu from Arrow. Great.
Bring me the head of machine gun girl - south american exploitation - good.
The Bay - above average found footage film.
ABC's of Death - finally an anthology film that works. Excellent (especially D, P and T).
Aftershock - a great earthquake film starring Eli Roth who provided a super Q&A.

Now for bed.

Had a laugh with Lenzi's Nightmare City. A shame the budget clearly wasn't there for gore and makeup effects aside from the odd tit n' eye gouge  Any of you guys heard the director commentary on this Swiss R2? It's a hoot  I thought I had a faulty disc at first, had to fast forward a good chunk into the film to hear anything from the man. It's just little bits here and there spoken into a tape recorder (you can hear the stop and record button pushes), him giving the time code so it can be synced up to the picture . . .

Sadly I only have the ABUK release. Sounds fun!

Slippery Jack 24th February 2013 06:17 PM

Yeah, I only heard bits of it, gonna go back tonight and see if it's worth sitting through it all. From the bits I heard, he just gleefully describes what is happening on screen in broken English. "Look out, preety laydee! The zombie is-a coming to get you!"

Plus I noticed the interview with him elsewhere on the disc is 50 minutes long  . . .

Cop Out

Kevin Smith Project session 9

http://letterboxd.com/jmc/list/kevin-smith-project/

Dave: This is police brutality.
Jimmy Monroe: Not yet...

Movie making brutality... The direction itself is ok, the script is awful though. I can't stand Bruce Willis at the best of times, but oh my god... Not seen so much uninterested acting in a long time, no one seems to give a shit.

At least I won't have to watch this piece of crap again. I can forgive KS for this because he said he was just testing to see if he could make a studio movie, and yeah he can, it's just a shame it's no good, he needs to stick to Scott Mosier produced films and scripts he wrote himself.

X FROM OUTER SPACE. Absolutely bonkers Japanese Kaiju flick, with probably one of the most ridiculous looking monsters in Kaiju history. I loved evey minute of it.

I was like that with Blade Runner. After forcing myself to watch it realized that I should trust my gut because I hated every second of it.

I still haven't seen it but I lost a lot of respect for Kevin Smith with his attitude to the reviews of the film. ""Writing a nasty review for Cop Out is akin to bullying a retarded kid" and complaining that critics should have to pay to see his movies. Awful stuff

I did think that myself at first, but I recently saw one of his Q&A's from last year and he explained his actions, whether you want to believe it or not, he wants to quit film directing which he has mentioned quite a few times over the last few years and before he did he wanted to see if he could make a Studio Movie - which he did and realised that it wasn't for him.

He also thought to himself that the best way to get out of the business is to piss off the press - echoing the plot point in Jersey Girl when Affleck's character blasts Will Smith. He certainally succeeded in pissing off the press, but I think he ended up- pissing off his fans too - many of which still haven't forgiven him.

Luckily for me I'm not fickle, and I really like Red State - so no harm no foul in my eyes - Cop Out is shit though

PaulD 25th February 2013 09:33 AM

Same here; I watched Red State with an open-mind and enjoyed it overall. Was a very different sort of film you're used to with Smith and all the better for it (save for some of the dialogue in the last scene).

Mixed bag at the weekend....THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS

Paranormal Activity 4. A confused and confusing mess, with two standout moments for me, the much lauded kinect sequence made my eyes hurt so f to that!!! Will still watch the 3rd, but sheeeesh, diminishing returns etc......AAAnyway

Argo. Look, on a purely human level twas a decent, emotionally involving tale, but the CIA aren't "good guys" by any stretch of the imagination IMO.

Malice In Wonderland. Dyer Time!!! Odd wee thing, only watched half because I noticed a Lichtenstein doc on BBC4, so a bit cheeky, but I liked what I'd seen, so will rewatch and put up a proper review on the appropriate thread cough cough geezer...;)

Killer Joe. Liked this curious blend of Tennessee Williams and Jim Thompson (it's theatrical origins are obvious, but decently rounded out), haven't had much time for MM in the past, but this is certainly a singular performance, Recommended!!

Wreck It Ralph. Too formulaic in structure for me, not a patch on TS3, regardless what Wossy says in the ads, some nice references but was too two dimensional for my tastes:lol:;)

Apparently he run out of story and his brother dared him to end it with 'the rapture'. It does stop the film from being great.

It was just the crass "Typical Kevin Smith Sodomy Jokes" in that scene that I found unnecessary and which jarred with the rest of the film. That said, I'm going to buy Red State now as I don't own it and fancy seeing it again!

Justin101 25th February 2013 11:08 AM

Mine just got delivered in time for the final Kevin Smith Project session tonight, it was like £5.80 on amazon, Blu-ray.

I think what really makes RED STATE stand out is michael parks. He's incredible in the film, simply brilliant. I thought the end was a little bit of a cop-out (pardon the pun) but its a satisfying movie overall and worth watching for parks performance. His sermon is chilling and powerfully delivered and hopefully one day he'll get an oscar for something. I've liked his work since twin peaks.

Mojo 25th February 2013 11:52 AM

Bloody Flesh
Obscure 80's Spanish horror, with all sorts of weirdness occurring after an explosion forces a town's residents to the country. Ghostly dead bodies, bloodlust and bizarre behaviour ensues, mostly centering around an American girl, in a fiilm that pretty much defies description. Complete with a very eerie soundtrack, I'm not sure about bloody flesh, but it's bloody weird! Worth checking out.

Hi Josh - here's a version of this you might find interesting:

Edition Filmmuseum Shop - Die freudlose Gasse Edition Filmmuseum 48

Invid Ninja 25th February 2013 09:32 PM

So haven't been on here for awhile, here is a few highlights:

The Keep (1983) Went to the 35mm screening in London's Prince Charles Cinema, first time viewing this elusive part of Michael Mann's filmography. From a story perspective, it's easy to tell what remains is a truncated version of a nonetheless cool vision of high gothic fantasy. The atmosphere is intoxicating akin to a mixture of German expressionism and Fulci on a massive budget punctuated by Tangerine Dream's hypnotic synth rock score. Flawed, but to me thoroughly entertaining and fascinating.

Drive (1997) Definetly a hidden gem here, a solid and expertly choreographed martial arts film with lightening fast action from Dacascos and some fun 90's buddy humour. Also Dacascos has a bar karaoke scene before being attacked by motocross assassins. Brilliant.

Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) Yes, it's costume drama from the future director of the musical Lost Horizon. Yes, it's also for you history buffs out there wildly inaccurate. But then again, the chance to watch a film in which 70's era Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson have a jolly chinwag in boisterous costume would always prove to be enticing for me.

Yep, I saw Guyver: Dark Hero many years ago when growing up on the old UK tapes of the OVA series. Also good fun. :)
