Vehicle 19. 2013

Michael, a American who has broke his parole and travels to Johannesburg to reconcile with his ex, given the wrong car he uncovers a phone and a gun along with a passenger in the boot and corruption within the police.

This was a blind watch me and had no idea what I was going into with this film, Paul Walker tries to step out of the shadow with Fast and Furious by taking on a film purely set and filmed in a car. The cinematography was decent during the police chase as it's a expect the unexpected and never know what could be round the corner or coming towards you. The plot of the story is decent but not the best even though at the end with what Michael goes through you can only cheer.

Cannibal Club

Brazilian Movie which sees a wealthy couple who are part of an elite club which includes live sex shows before partaking in feasting on the stars of the show deal with all situations arising after the Wife catches the President of the club in a compromising situation.

Being a foreign subtitled Film, this certainly gets more leeway regarding the sexual content and whilst you only see meat getting cut up, it does certainly imply what it's meant to be. Not a bad find (Amazing what you find in HMV some days)

Chances are this would have been a Video Nasty and that a dubbed version would be released by the old Vipco.

Rookie Of The Year

1993 Family Sports Film which sees a kid play for the Chicago Cubs Baseball team after he develops a 100mph Fastball. I do like my Sports Movies and remember renting this one back in the day and it's still enjoyable. Gary Busey and Daniel Stern star whilst John Candy plays The Announcer.

Okay, you perform live sex shows then eat people?

Exactly what would prove to be a compromising situation after that?

I didn't explain it properly, they watched the performance then apparently ate them.

The wife caught the President of the group doing something which he tried to cover up

Darkroom. 1989.

A killer invades a family home farm and kills them one by one and takes photo's of their dying bodies.

We are all probably familiar with Nico Mastorakis's film Island Of Death and this tries to keep the incestuous thing going but apparently he only directed the opening scenes of the film and that's where the film goes downhill after that. The murders are done off camera with a bit...just a bit of blood showing, the acting is laughable but you go with what you have been given to say and a very slow pace and its predictable who the killer is early in to the film, really disappointed in this film.

Vice Academy (1989)

I streamed this on the Arrow Player last night, just what the doctor ordered, an 80s trash comedy starring everybody's favourite trainee Vice Cop, Linnea Quigley... I love her, I don't know why because she's a terrible actress and her 'assets' aren't what I'm into but she makes me feel a certain way and I like it...

Didi, Shawnee and Dwayne are flunking classes and they're not going to graduate unless they can make 10 arrests by tomorrow! They infiltrate an underage porno ring and then a prostitution racket headed by the beehived 'Queen Bee'. There are plenty of boobs and panties on display and some 'comedy' both intentional and otherwise mixed in with some awful acting, not sure if it was for the camp aspect but I liked it. I might watch the sequel later

Have you seen it, Susan?

That scene is very grueling.

I cringed the first time I saw it, especially when he slashed his throat, but the second time I watched it, I just felt incredibly sad for him, it really hit me and I felt a bit teary! It's very brutal but very powerful scene. Great acting from Jack Kilmer.

Howl (2015)

The last train out of London on a stormy night suddenly screeches to a halt passing through a forest apparently because it hit something on the line. When the driver goes missing, the passengers and two remaining train employees realize that something is lurking in the woods and is hunting them down.

This British werewolf film is a slick creature feature with some excellent prosthetic FX work and the creatures are extremely effective be it lurking in the shadow of the woods or in full on monster attacks.

Howl isn't just about the creatures though. A decent cast for this sort of thing including Shauna Macdonald (The Descent ), Ed Speleers (Downton Abbey), Rosie Day (Terrific in The Seasoning House) and Sean Pertwee (Practically everything) ensure that the script is handled well and characterization is always at the fore. In fact in comparison to most horror productions the writing is excellent. Day, so obnoxious to begin with shows her true self as a scared young girl the minute diversity strikes and you really feel for her plight, and it's the same for many of the protagonists, as the viewer watches how the passengers react to their predicament rather than just being werewolf fodder. The set up of a disparate group of people reacting to a terrifying ordeal in a single location is very Carpenter-esq.

Howl is Paul Hyett's second directorial effort. His first was the superb The Seasoning House. He seems to be a director who can produce the goods be it believable characters, an atmosphere thick with dread or good old fashioned scares.

Howl isn't the best werewolf film from recent times, Late Phases and Wer are superior but it adds to a strong field of Lycan movies these last few years and was very enjoyable second time around.
