I didn't know that. What a knob.

Me too. Even though the 1956 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the better, more suspenseful film, I prefer the 1978
version.

I didn't dislike either, I must reiterate, I was just disappointed, I think that their respective reputations out shined the reality - which might have had more to do with my mood at the time of watching.

Demdike@Cult Labs 14th September 2016 04:20 PM

Ferrara's Body Snatchers is easily the best take on the subject.

No, that's not a joke. I love it.

I haven't seen it, but it must be better than The Invasion, the pisspoor 2007 version with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.

Really. You surprise me. It's written by Stuart Gordon. A terrific take on the source material with perhaps even more paranoia as it's set on an army base.

Another for the wish list!

I've just added Body Snatchers as high priority to my Lovefilm rental list, so there's a fair chance it will be sent out tomorrow.

I'm fair stunned you haven't seen it, especially as it's directed by Abel Ferrara.

After a carafe of red wine, you wouldn't get any sense out of me!

In any case, there is very little chance of me 'doing a Teardrop' with something directed by Abel Ferrara! Frankie is in a league of his own of his own.

Babylon A.D. (2008)

Critically panned escapade in which mercenary Vin Diesel has to escort a young woman from some Russian post apocalyptic backwater to New York. Simple enough except it transpires said girl has certain powers that everyone both good and bad want to get their hands on.

I always find this ridiculously entertaining, others probably just find it ridiculous. It's a fast moving action sci-fi adventure with Diesel at his ass kicking best - few words but a lot of punches. I like Vin Diesel, yes he can act like a chunk of wood at times but he's also not afraid to surround himself with 'proper' actors which is a move that can often fail but he always seems to come out of it with a bit of credibility, in my eyes anyway. Here we have Charlotte Rampling and Gérard Depardieu, not to mention the always brilliant Mark Strong, all three possibly wondering exactly why they are making this type of film yet somehow it works. Add Hong Kong legend Michelle Yeoh to proceedings and you know the bad guys are in trouble.

Babylon A.D., whilst not up there with his Fast and Furious or XXX films, is still an all round slice of dumb but fun sci-fi goodness. You lot probably hate it.

Landmine goes click.

Attachment 182657

I noticed this was on Horror Channel so thought i'd give it a shot, seeing as i'd heard it had a few decent reviews.
I'd read the premise and wondered how they were going to stretch the idea out to a feature length.
Basically two blokes and a girl go sightseeing and while on top of a mountain one of them happens to stand on a land mine.
One ends up leaving and the man on the mine and girl must try to figure out how to survive, but thats not all a local guy appears who appears to want to help.
But it turns out said local is a sadistic psycho who proceeds to play mental head **** games and make the situation much worse.

I'm not going to say much else because it's best not to know too much, but i have to say i found this to be pretty good. It's low budget but is well shot, the acting is fairly decent for a modern low budget horror, and it is a film that is making me think afterwards, which is always a good sign in my mind.

All the actors do well, the psycho is very human which makes his actions more chilling, the guy on the mine is pretty decent too, as he is unable to move and must watch what occurs before him.

The bad points were that it was a little contrived maybe and there are parts that seemed to be stretched out a little too long.

The underlining message to me seems to be that violence is not glamorous, that it only creates more violence in response, and it alters people, leaving people psychologically scarred, and maybe causes them to do things they wouldn't normally even contemplate. There are no winners.

Seeing that the plot revolves around a weapon of war, i can't help wondering if it's a sly dig at the nature of armed conflict itself.

Maybe not a film for everyone, but i found it quite tense in places and a worthwhile watch.

But i do like these small group of people in a tense situation type films.

Recommended, if you like that sort of thing.:) 8/10 :pop2:

I attempted to watch the American version of 'We Are What We Are'

I gave up after about an hour because nothing had happened!

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 15th September 2016 11:40 AM

Here's my latest image of the 20 movies I've seen since the other one of these. I've seen a few since then, but they'll be going into the next image. Crazy to think I've been doing this for a good few years now!

  1. The Worm Eaters - Most gross-out, disgusting 'kids' movie ever made
  2. The Confessional Murders - Excellent British horror from the 70s. Top stuff!
  3. The Strange World Of Coffin Joe - Another surreal nightmare in the Coffin Joe series
  4. The Rape Of The Vampire - Very strange but a great watch!
  5. The Sword In The Stone - A Disney classic that's still hilarious - although it does drag a bit
  6. The Nutty Professor - Never gets old! One of E. Murphy's best IMO
  7. The Return Of Ringo - One of the best Spaghetti Westerns, that isn't from Leone
  8. Panic - New London thriller that's very similar to Rear Window. Another great watch
  9. The Last King - Vikings on skis! Lots of action - decent for a viking flick
  10. Carnival Of Blood - Yawn! Got so bored of this film. I used to really like it though
  11. The Man Who Fell To Earth - Classic of David Bowie's. Although it is a tad too slow, it's one of the finest British sci-fis
  12. Let's Be Evil - One of the most visually unique horror films I've seen. Virtual Reality nightmare
  13. The Living Dead At Manchester Morgue - A zombie MASTERPIECE! Watched after finding out the place I visited in Peak District was a filming location from the film!
  14. One Million Years BC - My personal fave Hammer film
  15. A Night At The Opera - Classic Marx comedy
  16. Cannibal: The Musical - Slightly overrated, but still lots of fun. Catchy songs too!
  17. Hue & Cry - Excellent British B&W film. Highly recommended for a Sunday afternoon
  18. Catfish - Interesting documentary if it wasn't all faked (apparently)
  19. Looney Tunes Back In Action - Love the Looney Tunes! Although it can't come even close to Space Jam
  20. Bloodbath At The House Of Death - Huge fan of the British horror comedy with Kenny Everett and Vincent Price. Two British legends! Horror laughs done in the best possible taste...

Watched that Peeping Tom (Michael Powell, 1960)
Yes, it is sicker than Psycho. I could go and on. But I don't have to...surely? After a decade of utter tweeness, this must have been a total hand grenade at the time. Good old British repression destroyed one of the finest film makers this country has ever produced.
Thankfully no one will attempt an shot-by-shot remake of this.

Don't Breathe (2016) - 2.5/5

It was OK, got a bit silly with its constant false endings.

Blair Witch (2016) - 1.5/5

A boring rehash of the original masquerading as a sequel.

monkeypedro 15th September 2016 10:57 PM

I went to a screening in London of Blair Witch on Wednesday night and was very disappointed as adds it nothing new to the genre and i didn't really care about the characters. It does have a exceptionally loud soundtrack which stopped me nodding off. Only great thing about the screening was getting free beer, and a Blair Witch poster and t-shirt.

I am not really a fan of found footage movies but do recommend an upcoming movie called FOUND FOOTAGE 3D which had likeable characters, some good jump scares and the added bonus of well done 3D. Not sure when or if it actually is getting a cinema release but definitely keep an eye out for it
