I haven't seen The Ward or Village of the Damned but i do like every other film i have seen of his.

Escape from L.A. is perhaps his worst but it does have its moments. I even quite like Ghosts of Mars, its a decent action flick.

His two episodes of Masters of Horror are both very good, and In the Mouth of Madness is a near classic.

I've tried to watch Ghost of Mars a few times and just cant get into it. I do quite like Vampires though, James Woods is awesome in it.

They Live is great, it's one of my favourite Carpenter films.

Why do such great directors, who could obviously produce precious metals from base metals, with no budget at all make great atmospheric, original, timeless classics, drift slowly into making average, with no substance or originality, movies that avergage joe director can knock out? Carpenter, Argento, Wes Craven, Corman.......these people surely dont run out of ideas, creativity because I see them as gifted with talent, something that should never leave them, so why the drivvle later on in their careers? Budget? Audience? Studios?
All the above and many more have changed my life over the years and I will always whatch what they churn out as we all will, even if its just to say how bad it is!

Carpneters They Live is brilliant, the soundtrack is soooo moody all the way through, cheesy in a great way!
Halloween changed my whole outlook on movies when first watched as a kid, I remember having a VHS video recorder, rented it out and using a portable cassette deck, recorded the movie onto tape to listen to in my bedroom in the dark. Bliss!
Vampires was a good film for his later efforts......Dark Star on Blu ray? yes please.

I love JC and most of his films. The Thing, Halloween, Escape From New York and Big Trouble in Little China are my favorites.

Sadly, his last film The Ward was pretty horrible and I believe his best days are behind him.

In The Mouth of Madness is a criminally underrated film, imo. In fact, I would say that along with Halloween and The Thing, ItMoM ranks as one of Carpenter's greatest cinematic achievements. I'd also rate it, along with Quatermass and the Pit, as one of the finest de facto Lovecraftian films ever made.
