Brutal Planet and Dragontown are the period of Alice History which never really struck a chord with me, it's not what I was looking for in an Alice Cooper record and other bands who broke the ground with these new musicals styles did it better, however with The Eyes of and Dirty Diamonds he got his hard rock swagger back and I enjoyed contemporary Alice once more.

The problem is...between 2006-2016, Alice only released 2 studio albums: 'Along Came A Spider' and 'Welcome 2 My Nightmare'!

I wasn't jumping that far ahead as far as Alice goes.

Three if you count Hollywood Vampires.

I must admit that (other than news stories) I am concentrating on Alice as a solo artiste at the moment. I am treating The Vampires as a side-project only

Definitely. However when you get to present day Alice this is what you'll have to review i guess.

He's devoting a lot of time to it, and why not? On paper it's a great superstar project as i guess it is live experience. I for one would love to see them.

After all Alice has seen and done everything but this is a new experience for him in a way. Go out and do a show with some famous pals, performing the music you want to play.

Get well soon Mr. Perry.

It seems that he has also returned to politics, and is currently running for both President of the USA and also Prime Minister of the UK

Alice Cooper Launches Political Career, Remakes 'Elected'

Alice Cooper launches campaigns to become Prime Minister and President

His full political manifesto is:

"THE WHOLE WORLD'S GOING CRAZY!

LOOKING FOR A BETTER CANDIDATE? A BETTER PLATFORM?

LOOK NO FURTHER

GET ALICE COOPER 'ELECTED'

ALICE COOPER RUNS FOR U.S. PRESIDENT AND U.K. PRIME MINISTER

“A TROUBLED MAN FOR TROUBLED TIMES”

July 12, 2016 – Los Angeles, CA -- Alice Cooper is tired of the rhetoric - the mudslinging – the media frenzy. Keeping his snake in his cage and the guillotine in storage, he is putting people before career. Alice Cooper wants to be "Elected".

His classic 1972 hit is once again an anthem for modern times and when it all boils down to it – a long flowing mane of (real) hair beats Bernie/The Donald/Hillary/Boris styles hands down and his American accent and people's policies are way easier for the British to understand than any of Theresa May's (although it might not be just the accent).

But it’s not all about debonair good looks, long flowing locks and a wicked accent -- Alice Cooper has a platform that every voter can get behind. He is asking his fellow Americans, his British friends and all those around the world who are disillusioned with their leaders, to join "The Wild Party."

Alice Cooper has spent countless nights on the road; many troubled hours worrying about the course of our great nations. Not afraid of controversy or springing into action, Alice Cooper plans to channel every ounce of energy (in between his Alice Cooper and Hollywood Vampire concerts, his syndicated radio show "Nights With Alice Cooper”, and his daily round of golf, of course) towards solving the world’s problems. He is tackling the everyday concerns discussed among his fellow woman and man - the ordinary, decent hard working (and rocking) people he meets and entertains every day while performing nearly 100 concerts a year around the world.

So, if you’re looking for a candidate with a platform that matters, vote Alice Cooper, the man with the plan to tackle the hot button, contentious and provocative issues on the minds of the real America and Britain:

⦁ Getting Brian Johnson back in AC/DC
⦁ A snake in every pot
⦁ No more pencils, no more books
⦁ Adding Lemmy to Mt Rushmore
⦁ Rename Big Ben "Big Lemmy"
⦁ Groucho Marx on the $50 bill
⦁ Peter Sellers on the £20 note
⦁ Cupholders required for every airplane seat
⦁ Ban on talking during movies in movie theatres
⦁ Ban on taking selfies, except on a designated National Selfie Day

These "troubled times" call for a "troubled mind" indeed. These "troubled times" call for Alice Cooper.
Said Alice, "Why NOT me? I have t shirts to sell.""

The 7th song on the album, 'Pessi-Mystic' has lyrics that are very dark, depressing and nihilistic. Musically, it's quieter than what has gone before, but much more atmospheric

By now, you should have realised that the entire 'Brutal Planet' album is not a feel good thing! What makes it even more disturbing is the fact that the themes covered on the record are just as relevant today (if not more so) then they were when the album was released

One of the co-writers of the song is Brian Nelson, who is better known to Alice fans as 'Renfield'. He was a superfan, who ended us as Alice's personal assistant, and much of the memorabilia that is available is from his personal collection. He died in June 2009, and is much missed by the whole Alice family

07/11 - Pessi-Mystic (Cooper, Marlette, Nelson)

"Don't need a crystal ball for me to see clearly
No astrology or Tarot cards
Watching CNN and holding my breath
To face the daily news scares me to death

I'm pessi-mystic
I'm so fatalistic
I'm pessi-mystic
I don't believe a thing
I'm pessi-mystic
I'm so nihlistic
I'm pessi-mystic
For what tomorrow brings

I can't hear a word you say
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
I like being sick this way
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up

Everybody's mind is badly infected
Everybody feeds the parasite
Everything is dark so why not accept it?
Everything is far more black than white

I'm pessi-mystic
I'm so fatalistic
I'm pessi-mystic
I don't believe a thing
I'm pessi-mystic
I'm so pissed-off-istic
I'm pessi-mystic
Of what tomorrow brings

I can't hear a word you say
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
I like feeling sick this way
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up

Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up

I'm pessi-mystic
I'm so fatalistic
I'm pessi-mystic
I don't believe a thing
I'm pessi-mystic
I'm so nihlistic
I'm pessi-mystic
Of what tomorrow brings

I can't hear a word you say
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
I like being sick this way
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
I can't hear a word you say
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
I like feeing sick this way
So shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up
Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up"

The following song, 'Gimme', was the only single release from the album. The 'B' side was 'Brutal Planet'. It reached #103 in the UK chart.

Lyrically, it's interesting. Moving away from the realities of the true life horrors that has filled the album up to this point, this song is about a Faustian pact with the Devil. I wonder if it was originally meant for 'The Last Temptation' album, because it would have fitted in perfectly with the story told there - Alice as The Showman/Satan

After the previous 'wrist-slashing' songs on the album, it's good to have a return to the lighter, 'fun' side of Alice Cooper

08/11 - Gimme (Cooper, Marlette)

"I know all your desires
Your heart is so full of pain
Is there something I can provide
When you feel like life's passed you by

I'm on your side
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that

Please don't ask me my name
Does it matter? I'm just here for you
Trust me. just let yourself go
And that's all you need to know

I'm on your side, sincerely
I'm your only friend
Yes I'm on your side, sincerely

Don't you wish you had it all
Don't you deserve to have it all
Kneel down and tell me what you need
Fame and money all for you
I can make your every dream come true

Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that

Tell me whose more important than you
You're the apple of my ancient eyes
How could the world be so cruel
I'll make you my own precious jewel

I'm on your side, sincerely
I'm the only one that cares
Yes, I'm on your side, sincerely

Don't you wish you had it all
Don't you deserve to have it all
Kneel down and tell me what you need
Fame and money all for you
I can make your every dream come true

There is one thing
I mean, everything has a price
I really hate to repeat myself but... nothing's free

Yes I'm on your side, sincerely
I'm the only one that cares
Oh I'm on your side, sincerely

Don't you wish you had it all
Don't you deserve to have it all
Kneel down and tell me what you need
Don't you deserve to have it all
Don't you wish you had it all
Don't you deserve to have it all
Kneel down and tell me what you need
Fame and money all for you
I can make your every dream come true

Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that
Gimme this gimme that"

The next song,'It's The Little Things', is another fun one. It's more heavy metal than industrial rock, faster and crunchier. Alice also quotes from some of the older songs here, which is always an entertaining 'Easter egg' for older fans

When performed live, the song is introduced with a rare spoken monologue from Alice, where he has a rant about things that bother him, picking on members of the audience wearing Ozzy/Marilyn Manson/Kiss T-shirts ("my disobedient children") before stating "It`s just the little things, that drive me wild!"

09/11 - It's The Little Things (Cooper, Marlette)

"You can burn my house, You can cut my hair
You can make me wrestle naked with a grizzly bear
You can poison my cat, Baby I don't care
But if you talk in the movies I'll kill you right there

It's the little things
It's just the little things
Aw it's the little things
It's just the little things
Yeah it's the little things
That drive me wild

I'm like a mad dog
I'm on a short leash
I'm on a tight rope hanging by a thread
I'm on some thin ice
You push me too far
Welcome to my nightmare
No more Mr. Nice Guy

You can steal my car and drive it into the lake
You can stick me in the oven and put it on bake
You could throw a big brick through my window pane
But if I ever hear you ask me how I got my name

It's the little things
It's just the little things
Aw it's the little things
It's just the little things
Yeah it's the little things
That drive me wild

I'm like a mad dog
I'm on a short leash
I'm on a tight rope hanging by a thread
I'm on some thin ice
You push me too far
Welcome to my nightmare
No more Mr. Nice Guy

I've done it all
I mean I been everywhere
I've been beaten
I been stabbed
I been hung
I been burried alive
And I can deal with that
But its the little things

It's the little things
It's just the little things
Yeah it's the little things
Just the little things
Aw it's the little things
That drive me wild

I'm like a mad dog
I'm on a short leash
I'm on a tight rope hanging by a thread
I'm on some thin ice
You push me too far
I'm just a psycho
Pathic psycho pathic

I'm like a mad dog
I'm on a short leash
I'm on a tight rope hanging by a thread
I'm on some thin ice
You push me too far
Welcome to my nightmare
No more Mr. Nice Guy

It's the little things
Aw it's the little things
It's just the little things"

'Take It Like A Woman' is the albums only ballad. It's a return to the domestic violence scenario, previously used to good effect with 'Only Women Bleed'. This song is not quite as masterful as 'OWB', but after the industrial 'noise' of the other songs on the album, it's a welcome change

10/11 - Take It Like A Woman (Cooper, Marlette)

"I bet ya never thought that it would never turn out like this
Mama's little girl, Daddy's little princess
But somewhere in your fairy tale everything went wrong
Now the sun don't shine, The words don't ryhme
You're out of time

You've been beaten down, kicked around on the ground
But you took it like a woman
Victimized, terrorized, paralyzed
But you took it like a woman
Pushed too far, pulled too hard, deeply scarred
I know you must have felt the pain
But you took it like a woman

Ya thought you had your Mr. Right but he was really Mr. Hyde
Ya gave him your most precious gift, you were his bleeding bride
He tied you up pulled your hair, and slapped your innocent face
Yeah, you were black and blue, he laughed at you
So what'd you do?

Aw you've been beaten down, kicked around on the ground
But you took it like a woman
Victimized, terrorized, paralyzed
But you took it like a woman
Pushed too far pulled too hard, deeply scarred
I know you must have felt the pain
But you took it like a woman

And so its over now
Your fantasy life is finally at an end
And the world above is still a brutal place
And the story will start again

You been beaten down, kicked around on the ground
But you took it like a woman
Victimized, terrorized, paralyzed
But you took it like a woman
Pushed too far, pulled too hard, deeply scarred
I know you must have felt the pain
Felt the pain
I know you must have felt the pain
But you took it like a woman

You took it like a woman
I know you must have felt the pain
You took it like a woman
I know you must have felt the pain
You took it like a woman
I know you must have felt the pain
But you took it like a woman"

The final song on the standard release of the album is 'Cold Machines', which has a futurist feel to it - especially during the intro. It's back to the industrial sound that has been the backbone of the album, with the drums in particular kicking up a storm. It's an entertaining end to an album that you have to be in the right mood to fully appreciate

11/11 - Cold Machines (Cooper/Marlette)

"I see you working at your station
Radiation burns my eyes
Love's forbidden so is passion
This whole place is sterilized

I just want to see tomorrow
Day by day to just survive
But this place is built to kill me
No one here gets out alive

I don't wanna be
I don't wanna be
Just a memory
I don't wanna be
I don't wanna be
Gone

You don't know my name
You don't know my number
You don't know my face at all (at all at all at all)
We walk right past each other, every single day
Like cold machines, we're marching on and on and on and on and on

Got your thumb print always with me
Got your barcode memorized
They came here to electroshock me
But can they erase you from my mind?

I don't wanna be
I don't wanna be
Just a memory
I don't wanna be
I don't wanna be
Gone

You don't know my name
You don't know my number
You don't know my face at all (at all at all at all)
We walk right past each other, every single day
Like cold machines, we're marching on and on and on and on and on

I don't wanna be
I don't wanna be
Just a memory
I don't wanna be
I don't wanna be
Gone

You don't know my name
You don't know my number
You don't know my face at all (at all at all at all)
We walk right past each other, every single day
Like cold machines, we're marching on and on and on and on and on"

The tour to promote the album went under the title Brutally Live. The tour was splint into two legs, with the first part, which opened in Europe, running between June 10th - November 11th 2000. UK dates were between July 11th - July 20th, and took in Newport, Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Portsmouth, London (Hammersmith) and Nottingham. Support came from Lukin. After these dates, the tour moved to the US

The touring band consisted of:

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Ryan Roxie - Guitar
Pete Friesen - Guitar
Greg Smith - Bass
Eric Singer - Drums
Teddy `Zigzag` Andreadis - Keyboards

This was the first tour to feature Calico as one of the dancers, and she appeared as the whipgirl and nurse. During the band introductions, Alice called her 'My own little nightmare'

Between Nov 15th - 30th, Alice performs as part of the 'British Rock Symphony' in South America

The second leg of the 'Brutally Live' tour started in Australia on April 13th, 2001. On April 26th, the show returned to Europe for some more dates, including the UK between May 15th - May 21st. Where the first part had been a theatre tour, this was an arena tour, and dates were at Bournmouth, Manchester, Wembley, Cardiff, Birmingham and Edinburgh. Support for these shows came from Dio and Orange Goblin

The basic setlist for both legs of the show was:

  • Brutal Planet
  • Gimme
  • Go To Hell
  • Blow Me A Kiss
  • Eighteen
  • Pick Up The Bones
  • Feed My Frankenstein
  • Wicked Young Man
  • Dead Babies
  • Ballad Of Dwight Fry
  • I Love The Dead/Devil`s Food/Black Widow - Instrumental
  • Drum Solo
  • No More Mr Nice Guy
  • It`s Hot Tonight
  • Caught In A Dream
  • It`s The Little Things
  • Poison
  • Take It Like A Woman/Only Women Bleed
  • You Drive Me Nervous
  • Under My Wheels
  • School`s Out
  • Billion Dollar Babies
  • My Generation (The Who cover)
  • Elected
  • Brutal Planet Reprise

There was a DVD released of the tour, entitled 'Brutally Live', and recorded at the Hammersmith Apollo show on July 19th, 2000. It is a good theatrical one, and highly recommended

After the first European leg of the tour, a special 'Tour Edition' of 'Brutal Planet' was released in Europe, which contained a second CD featuring some live cuts taken from the DVD. These songs were:
  • It's The Little Things
  • Wicked Young Man
  • Poison
  • My Generation
  • Audio only - Total Rock Rockumentary (Radio Show)

Finally, when the original album was released in Japan and Australia, it contained an extra song that was not featured on the standard release. This song is called 'Can't Sleep, Clowns Will Eat Me', and it was inspired by an episode of 'The Simpsons'!

A bit of good news. Joe Perry will be returning to the stage for tonight's Hollywood Vampires show in California. He has been out of action for the last 11 days! During this time, the band have had Joe's amp and hat on stage and shown photos on the video screen

He needs to take things easy tho - they have got four shows in four days, with the tour ending on Monday

Alice then returns to the solo tour on August 6th
