I don't know if you were aware but back then HMV had a free magazine that catered for all none pop and rock music.

You could pick them up in HMV Manchester's basement where all the country, soundtracks, jazz etc were. I used to read it in store and disappear to the listening stations then buy one or two each visit. It introduced me to a hell of a lot of music i'd never have even known about. Artists such as German torch light singer Ute Lemper and her brilliant album Punishing Kiss featuring songs by Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Elvis Costello, Neil Hannon and others.

Things seemed so much more, real, cool, organic...not sure which words i'm grasping for but things were different when it came to buying music back then.

Ute Lemper - Little Water Song

I don't remember the magazine, but I do remember when HMV had the additional section in a quiet glassed off area for the Jazz/Classical/Country genres. The one in Liverpool was massive. Now it's just 2-3 rows of CDs at the back of the store.

I'll check out some Ute Lemper on Spotify after I've finished listening to Ella sings Cole Porter.

Thanks for the posts, lads. I've added everything available from Alison Krauss, plus the album with Union Station) and Diane Krall to make Spotify playlist, so that'll keep me busy for several days. I haven't heard anything from them before, so I'll try and report back with my thoughts.

There are a couple of albums with mixed artists, so it's possible I have added all of the albums available.
