I was sorry to read about the demise of Q magazine today. It's a mag that i've only bought a few copies of over the years usually an R.E.M. or Madonna cover, yet nevertheless it's a shame an established music mag will leave our shelves for good. The editor blames the Coronavirus crisis but that doesn't really account for it's falling readership over the last decade. I think basically it lost it's readers because the artists it bowed to such as U2, Dylan, Oasis, Blur and the whole Britpop scene are basically no more or at the very least sparse with their new records. The mag was always criticized for it's lengthy 'list' features which from the news today would now appear to be every other month these last few years. It also had a general lack of diversity when it came to the artists featured and reviewed. Metal bands were always seen as figures of fun and bands like Iron Maiden who topped HMV's best British album poll several years ago never had a decent album review from them (at least when i saw them) and were never considered for such lists which is bollocks. With Kerrang! also on hiatus until the live music scene returns it's not a great time for Bauer Media and their publications. |

I agree about the lack of diversity, the music scene that Q writes about simply doesn't exist any more, which is a shame on many levels. It's hard enough to be in printed journalism in this day and age and I think the endless nostalgia probably doesn't help matters when there are other magazines that specialise in that and do it better.

The latest CR which dropped through the door on Friday even had a cd with it - the first freebie since the crisis began from either publication - it's a Deep Purple ep if you were wondering - and have an exclusive cover interview with them too. |

It's clear this is a very difficult time for musicians and all those who make the living from music, both recorded and live.
